John CHRYSOCHOOS Obituary

CHRYSOCHOOS
Dr. John
Dr. John Chrysochoos, retired University of Toledo Chemistry professor and proud longtime resident of Toledo, OH died unexpectedly on October 23, 2016, at the age of 82, at his home.
John is survived by his wife, Alexandra; his children, Michael (Jo-Anne), Constantine (Tracy), and Irene; his grandchildren, Alexa (Aaron
Adkins), Zoe, Lauren, John and Dominick; his brother, Mitsos (Toula); his sister, Zoe, (Aleco Scaros); his brothers-in-law, Tally and George (Cindy); and many nieces and nephews in Cleveland and Greece. He was preceded in death by his parents, Michael and Irene and brother,
Paraskeva (Kiki).
John was a loving husband, father and grandfather
(Papou) to his entire family. He loved spending time up north at the family cottage in St. Helen, Michigan and enjoying family dinners several times a week at his home or the homes of his children. He was an avid sports fan of the University of Toledo, specifically the women's basketball team and often attended games with his children. John was also an active spectator at his grandchildren's sporting events including baseball, golf, hockey, softball, tennis, cheerleading, and basketball. John enjoyed travelling back to Greece (especially the island of Ikaria) with his family many times over his long life. His last trip occurred in 2014 and he was actively planning a trip this year.
John was born on the Greek island of Ikaria in 1934. He completed both his elementary and secondary education on the island, with a brief interruption while in Palestine as a war refugee; his higher education in chemistry was completed at the University of Athens (1953 - 1957). Following his discharge from the Greek Royal Navy (1958-1960), he earned his M.Sc. (1962) and Ph.D. (1964) in chemistry at the University of British Columbia in Vancouver, Canada.
In 1964 he settled in the United States as an educator and researcher. He was associated with several universities in North America and Greece, namely Harvard, IIT, the University of Western Ontario, the University of Toledo, Bowling Green State University, and the Universities of Crete and Patras. His last position was Professor Emeritus of chemistry at the University of Toledo, Ohio. John was a prolific writer and had published over one hundred scientific articles and abstracts and 8 books.

I was one of Dr Chrysochoos's Chemistry Students from 1972 until Graduation in 1977 at the University of Toledo. And he was one of my Chemistry Professors. Chemistry was required for my Degree in Geology. Our Academic Departments and Labs shared the same building on Campus. Dr Chrysochoos was a Fine Professor of Chemistry and learned much from his lectures in class. He really enjoyed the subject he taught and working with all his Students. The University has lost a Fine Professor.
