John Purdue Obituary

PURDUE John C. John C. Purdue, age 88, of Ottawa Hills died October 7, 2009. John was born in Lafayette, Indiana in 1921 to Sam and Marie Purdue. He attended the University of Michigan where he met Suzanne E. Cone, his one true love. They married in 1942 and Suzanne predeceased him in 2007, just days before their sixty-fifth anniversary. At Michigan, he ran track and earned degrees in English and Chemical Engineering. He went on to earn his law degree at the University of Toledo and became a patent attorney in 1950. He practiced in Toledo except when, at the beginning of his career, he worked for a brief time in the patent department at Dow Chemical in Midland, Michigan. At the December, 2009 Toledo Bar Association Holiday Luncheon, he was to have been honored as a sixty year member of the Association. He enjoyed the water immensely and he liked to fish. John was a gentleman and a family man. He is survived by four sons, John Jr., William and his wife, Ellen, David and his wife, Catherine and Paul and his wife, Barbara; a daughter, Susan Tanner and her husband, Scott; and numerous grandchildren and great-grand-children. There will be no visitation. There will be a memorial service at Collingwood Presbyterian Church in Toledo at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, October 17th, 2009, with a reception to follow. The family suggests that any tribute be in the form of a contribution to the church or to a charity of the donor's choice.

Dearest Purdue Family,
We were very saddened to read of the passing of your father, John. We knew that he was in ill health and recently was having difficulties appreciating life to its fullest. We will always remember your father as being kind and considerate, interested in life and others and willing to share heart and soul when asked by many. Fond memories will follow for years to come of his annual Christmas card pictures and thoughtful notes.

Sincere condolences to you all,

Cheryl. Ron and Laurel Volk

Super, and Family:\

I recv'd Super's FaceBook note last night. Therefore, I today checked the Legacy page. Your Father clearly was a very special man. I knew your Mom, through you (Super) more than anyone else in your family. Clearly, you all have wonderful memories. As we all know, cherish every moment. My deepest condolences.

With fondest memories, we remember your father and our good friend. Both he and Sue made us feel like we were part of your family. What wonderful memories we have of concerts, dinners at the Toledo Club and John's wit and humor. It was John who wrote a tribute on behalf of my father, Henry Stoltenberg, when he passed on. We warmly recall having dinner at their home enjoying Sue's famous spaghetti and thier companionship. Once again John and Sue are together.
