John Sheehy Obituary

SHEEHY

John Patrick

John Patrick "Pat" Sheehy, 75, of Oregon, Ohio passed away August 19, 2012, at Hospice of Northwest Ohio, Perrysburg surrounded by his loving and loyal family. He was born in Toledo, Ohio on August 8, 1937, to John and Martha (Kirkendall) Sheehy. Pat attended Good Shepherd Grade School and Central Catholic High School. He then joined the U.S. Marine Corp where he served tours in Japan as well as the continental U.S. Upon his return from military service, Pat worked as a laborer for John Nauman Construction Company. Pat soon became a cement finisher and joined Local Union 886. His membership with the Cement Masons spanned four decades. In addition to his work as a cement finisher, Pat worked as a Longshoreman at the C&O docks from 1967-1980.

Pat was married to Mary A. Casey for 43 years until her passing in 2004. Together they raised 7 children. Pat was immersed in the academic and sports pursuits of each of his children, including coaching his daughters basketball and softball teams. Their travels included trips to Phoenix AZ and many summers were spent with his children at Lake James in Indiana. After his retirement, Pat spent winters in Sarasota Florida.

While family and work were paramount to Pat's life he found time to attend and support numerous Notre Dame Football games. The commensurate fan, Pat attended Fighting Irish Games from California to Meadowlands and even attended games in Dublin, Ireland and Hawaii. When not able to attend the game in person, a TV or even transistor radio kept him close to the play by play. He was also a avid Detroit Tigers and Toledo Mud Hens fan. In addition, Pat Sheehy was a life-long Democrat. His memberships included Lucas County as well as Oregon Democrats. In retirement, Pat served as a precinct worker at Oregon Ohio. He served as an usher at St. Thomas Aquinas Catholic Church and worked on the church festival. Proud of his Irish heritage, Pat belonged to the Hibernians. He volunteered at St. Charles Hospital, Hospice of Northwest Ohio, Old News Boys, and Good Shepherd Church. Pat's many memberships included the Irish Club, Cardinal Stritch Boosters, and Toledo Refining Company Community Advisory Panel. Patrick touched the hearts of everyone he came in contact with and will be missed very much.

Surviving are his children, Maureen Sheehy, Patricia West, Danny and Michael Sheehy, and Shawn (Tadeusz) Gnida; 16 grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; sisters, Sharon (Ernest) Materni, Ann (Bob) Plummer, Kathleen (Ed) Kline and Jean Boraggina; brothers, Tom, Jim (Diane), Mike (Sandy), Charlie (Mary) and Bob Sheehy; sister-in-law, and very special friend, Janet Sheehy. Pat was preceded in death by his parents; wife; children, Kathleen and Brian; grandson, Joey; siblings, Mary and Ray Sheehy.

Visitation will be at Eggleston Meinert & Pavley Funeral Home, Oregon Chapel, 440 S. Coy Road, on Wednesday from 2:00 p.m. until 9:00 p.m., with a scripture service at 7:00 p.m. Mass of Christian Burial will take place on Thursday, August 23, 2012, at 10:00 a.m. at St. Thomas Aquinas Catholic Church, 720 White St., Toledo, Ohio and where family will greet visitors beginning at 9:30 a.m. Interment will follow in Lake Township Cemetery. The family requests any contributions be made in Pat's memory to Hospice of Northwest Ohio or the American Heart Association.

Sheehy Family, you have my condolences. The first time we met, he made a crack that I should dye my beard red and go around as The Irish' mascot. As a fan, that was a great joke. All my best to the family at this time.

I count myself amongst the lucky just to have known Pat. Truly to know Pat is to love him. What a sweet, selfless man. Always wanting to and willing to help anyone. I had the pleasure of being his water fitness instructor at the Y and never once when Pat was there did I ever have to worry about getting equipment ready for class..it was just one of those selfless things he always took care of. I will miss him terribly, his sweet smile, big hugs, and gentle nature. He has taught us much, and I am thankful to have known him, he has made me a better person. All of Pat's family will be in our prayers. Love and peace to each of you.
