John Solly Obituary

John R. Solly, Sr.

02/02/1942 - 03/13/2026

John R. Solly, Sr., affectionately known as "Johnny," passed away peacefully on March 13, 2026, at Hospice of Northwest Ohio, surrounded by the loving embrace of his family. Born in Toledo, Ohio, on February 2, 1942, John was the son of Jesse and Hazel (Mansburger) Solly. A life marked by dedication, love, and craftsmanship came to a close, leaving behind a legacy that will be treasured by all who knew him.

John's journey began in the heart of Toledo, where he met the love of his life, Margaret A. Solly, at Toledo Hospital. Their bond was sealed on August 31, 1961, beginning a lifelong partnership filled with adventure and devotion. Professionally, John gave his talents to United Steel Workers as a welder, where he earned a reputation as the expert craftsmen behind many significant projects, starting with the Central pipeline as an early Fitter with his father-in-law, Jack Kerin. His colleagues knew him as the go-to man for big projects, a man who could weld anything with precision and skill. He retired in 2003, leaving behind a remarkable career founded on hard work and pride.

John's passions extended beyond his vocation. Together with Margaret, he traveled extensively across the United States, with Mississippi and Florida holding special places in their hearts. He delighted in dancing, bowling, playing pool, hunting, fishing, and visits to casinos. After retiring, they made their home in Sandusky, Ohio, where they found tranquility by the serene waters of Lake Erie. Here, John spent many fulfilling years boating and working at Sam's Club and also K.O.A of Sandusky, Ohio, where he formed lasting friendships.

John's life was enriched by the family he so deeply loved and nurtured. He is survived by his devoted daughter, Tracy (Jeff) Person; and son, John (Theresa) Solly. He also leaves behind brothers, Jeff (Dora) Solly and Kevin (Cheri) Solly. John's greatest pride came from his grandchildren, Nikki, Chris (Kasey), Nick (Leah), Cody, Shane (Emily), Samantha, Shaun (Makayla), Sydney (Geoff), and John (Emily). His joy was further multiplied by the love of 15 great-grandchildren, Aidan, Kayleigh, Conor, Madyson, Macy, Maisley, Declan, Carter, Lincoln, Adelaide, Isac, Elenor, Olivia, Adelin, and Harper.

John was preceded in death by his parents, Jesse and Hazel Solly; his brother, Gilbert; his sister, Wanda; and his beloved grandson, Porter (Andy) Shambarger. Their memory will continue to live on in the hearts of those who loved him.
