John F. "Jack"
John F. "Jack" Werner, 91, of Genoa, Ohio, passed away on Saturday, May 16, 2015, at the Genoa Retirement Village. He was born in Genoa on August 13, 1923, and lived there his entire life. He was the 5th Eagle Scout in Genoa and was a former Scoutmaster of Boy Scout Troop #310. Jack graduated from Genoa High School in 1941.
He served 34 months in the U.S. Navy during WWII. Upon completion of the Navy's Electronic Technician program, learning to maintain and repair electronic gear aboard ship, he was assigned to Gulfport, MS, as an instructor in the same program.
Upon graduation from The Ohio State University in 1948 with a degree in electrical engineering, he was employed at Toledo Edison for 34 years. He was their Distribution Engineer, Superintendent of Operations and Director of Purchasing and Stores. He was a past national chairman of the Purchasing and Stores Committee of Edison Electric Institute. He served on the Executive Committee of the Public Utilities Committee of the National Association of Purchasing Management and was a past president of the Purchasing Management Association of Toledo.
Jack was an avid Ohio State football fan and enjoyed 60 years of games, Saturdays, in the Shoe. He also enjoyed numerous bowl games and bus trips to away games.
Jack served two terms on the Genoa Area Local Schools Board of Education during the building of the present Genoa High School. He was a member of Genoa's Athletic Hall of Fame. He was best known in Genoa for being "The Voice of the Comets" announcing Genoa High School football games from years 1948 through 1987.
He belonged to several Masonic bodies and was a Past Master of Genoa Lodge #433 F. & A.M. He was a past president of the Genoa Area Chamber of Commerce, a 20-year member of the Genoa American Legion Post #324, and served on Genoa's Board of Public Affairs and many years on Genoa's Planning Commission.
Jack is survived by his son, Bill (Phyllis) Werner; daughter-in-law, Sharon (Harpel) Werner; five grandchildren and 9 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, John C. and Elsie (Camper) Werner; his wife of 59 years, Dolores (Davis) Werner; brother, Waldo "Wink" Werner; son, John C. Werner, and grandson, Curtis Werner of Phoenix, AZ.
Visitation for Jack will be held on Thursday, May 21, 2015, from 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. in the Robinson-Walker Funeral Home & Crematory, 501 West St., Genoa, OH 43430. The Masonic Lodge will conduct a service at 7 p.m. on Thursday evening. The funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, May 22, 2015, in St. John's United Church of Christ, 1213 Washington St., Genoa, OH 43430. Military graveside services and interment will follow in the Clay Township Cemetery, Genoa. You are invited to join the family for a lunch at St. John's United Church of Christ Fellowship Hall following the interment.
