Joseph Frankowski Obituary

FRANKOWSKI Joseph J. Joseph John Frankowski, of the Polish Village, died September 16, 2011, in Point Place Care and Rehabilitation Center. He was born on Monday, April 11, 1927, in Toledo, to Tony and Pauline (Gralak) Frankowski. A Woodward High School Graduate he was proud to be on the City Championship Bowling team which beat the other Woodward High School team to win the 1945 Championship. After serving his country as an MP in the U.S. Army, he returned to Toledo. Joe served as Post Commander and Burial Corp member of the Buddy Frankowski VFW Post 5530, where he served as All American Commander, Special Aide, District 1 Commander, and Captain. He was a member of the Argonne Post of the American Legion, Catholic War Vets Jude Thaddeus Post and a Polish Army Vets volunteer. Joe was also active as a Board Member of the Veteran Service Commission and worked with Congresswoman Marcy Kaptur on Veteran's Issues and served on the AKP Board of Directors for the Zablocki Senior Center on LaGrange Street. In his younger days he coached the 4th ward Old Timer's Baseball Team on which his sons played as well as St. Vincent de Paul School CYO Basketball teams. Joe won the Kielbasa Trophy during the 1988 PIGTAP (Polish Invitational Golf Tournament And Party) golf tournament. Joe retired from the U.S. Postal Service in 1984 where he was a letter carrier for the Edgewater area in Point Place. He was a member of St. Adalbert and St. Vincent de Paul Catholic Churches, where he was a member of the St. Vincent de Paul Holy Name Society as well as active at their festivals. Surviving are his children, Dianne (Jerry) Jochum, James (Lisa) Frankowski, David (Cindy) Frankowski, and Andrew (Kristin) Frankowski; 10 grandchildren and 18 great-grandchildren. Also surviving are his brother, Stanley (Lucille) Frankowski and special friend, Barbara VanderHorst. Preceding him in death were his parents, his wife, Stella (Kos), and sisters, Helen Kwasniak and Genevieve Wagner. Friends may call Sunday September 18, from 2:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. where VFW services will be at 6:30 p.m. and Prayer Services will be held at 7:00 p.m. at the Urbanski Funeral Home 2907 Lagrange, (at Dexter St.) (419) 244-4611. Funeral services will begin Monday at 9:30 a.m. in the funeral home with the Mass at 10:00 a.m. in St. Hedwig Catholic Church. Interment will follow in Mt. Carmel Catholic Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to Saints Adalbert and Hedwig Catholic Church, Hospice of Northwest Ohio or to the American Parkinson's Association. Dianne, so sorry for your loss. Your Dad and Jim were at the Union Hall for the "Pin Dinner" when your Dad received a 50 or 60 year pin. It was good to see both of them. Again, my sympathies, I regret that I did not know in time to attend the viewing and service.
