Kate Lauren

Kate Lauren Doney, 24, of Sylvania, passed away Wednesday, August 7, 2013, at the Cleveland Clinic. She was born August 26, 1988, in Toledo, Ohio. Kate graduated Cum Laude from Bowling Green State University with a Bachelor of Science in Education and was a member of the Kappa Kappa Gamma Sorority.

Kate had a contagious passion for life that inspired all who knew her. A lover of the outdoors, she enjoyed soccer and weekends at her family's campground. Kate treasured motorcycle trips with her dad and loved to cook for others. Her ongoing passion was children. She coached a youth soccer team and looked forward to a career in early childhood education. And yet she taught both young and old much more than she could have in a classroom with her spirit, determination and courage. Kate thrived in living life to its fullest despite three successful battles with cancer and three bone marrow transplants. And through it all, she only focused on the needs of others especially those fighting similar battles. Her support included raising money for Light the Night and Relay for Life. For those touched by Kate's heart, courage and faith she was well beyond a family member or friend - she was, and continues to be, an inspiration.

Survivors include her parents, Tim and Cathy Doney; sisters, Kristin Doney and Kara Doney; grandparents, Tony and Mary Gerrish; several aunts and uncles; many cousins, and the family dog Kody. Kate was preceded in death by her grandparents, Stewart and Nancy Doney; her uncle, Dennis Bondy; cousin, Derek Doney, and dear friend, Kyle Sporleder, who was her rock & biggest supporter.

The family would like to thank the doctors, nurses and staff at Toledo Children's Hospital, Hickman Cancer Center and Cleveland Clinic for their care and support, especially Dr. Brian Bolwell her "quarterback".

Friends are invited to visit on Monday, August 12, 2013, from 2:00-8:00 p.m., at the Walker Funeral Home, 5155 Sylvania Avenue, (west of Corey). To honor Kate's wishes, colorful attire can be worn to this visitation service as a celebration of the life she lived. There will be a prayer service at 9:15 a.m. at the Walker Funeral Home on Tuesday, August 13, 2013, immediately followed by funeral services held at 10:00 a.m., at St. Joseph Parish, 5373 Main Street, (in Sylvania). Memorial contributions may be made to the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society Northern Ohio Chapter, 5700 Brecksville Rd., Independence, Ohio 44131.

I was privileged to have Kate as a student at BGSU. She was a wonderful young woman and an excellent student. Apparently, God needs a really good teacher right now, and He has chosen Kate! Prayers for comfort and strength for her family are being offered.

My condolences, love, and prayers go to all of you.I knew Kate from back in high school, and I can't ever recall and time that I didn't see a smile on her face. She was one of the nicest people I'd ever met. I'm so very sorry for your loss- Kate was an exceptional person with a heart of gold and she will be forever missed.
