Kristine Ensign Obituary

ENSIGN

Kristine M.

Kristine M. Ensign, age 44, passed away April 21, 2013, at her home in Grove City, OH. Kris was born February 4, 1969 in Toledo to Douglas and Georgette Ensign. She was a 1987 graduate of Clay High School in Oregon, OH where she played varsity volleyball, basketball and softball and earned many honors including first team Great Lakes League, and District 7 in all three sports for two years straight. She was awarded the Leta Wescotte Award for best female athlete her senior year and was inducted into the Clay High School Athletic Hall of Fame in 1998. Kris graduated from Bowling Green State University in 1993 with a B.S. in business education and received her M.S. in computer information technology from Regis University in 2003.

Kris began her teaching career in Toledo at Libbey High School where she taught business classes from 1993-2000. She was varsity volleyball coach at Cardinal Stritch High School from 1993-1999 where she was also the assistant varsity girls basketball coach. Kris began the fastpitch softball program at Stritch which she coached for 3 years and was the varsity assistant fastpitch softball coach at Central Catholic High School for five years. She relocated to Columbus where she taught accounting at Groveport Madison High School from 2000-2013. Her involvement in sports at Groveport Madison included varsity volleyball coach for 3 years, JV volleyball coach for 3 years, and assistant varsity fastpitch softball coach for 13 years. Kris' presence at her school could be seen and felt in many ways outside of teaching and coaching. She was a building technology coordinator, prom supervisor, photographer for both the yearbook and the Cruiser Gazette, and chaperoned and took pictures at every school event. She inspired many students to pursue careers in accounting and helped many of those she coached play softball at the collegiate level.

Kris learned she had angiosarcoma in 2010. Through this journey she has helped raise funds for Angiosarcoma Awareness, Inc., and the Ronald McDonald House by inspiring the entire Groveport Madison school district to collect pop can tabs. Kris' cancer inspired the GMHS students and staff to start "Mission Ensign" to help raise funds for Kris' travel expenses to and from Houston where she received care at MD Anderson Cancer Center.

Kris was preceded in death by her grandparents, K. Ward and Janette Ensign, George and Estelle Page; infant brother, Kenneth John, and dog, Azzi. She is survived by her devoted parents, Douglas and Georgette (Page) Ensign; sisters, Laurie (Jim) Adams, Karry Edwards Loch; brother, D. Ward Ensign; nieces and nephew, Kellie and Mitchell Adams and Alea Loch; numerous aunts, uncles, cousins, and friends. She also leaves behind her canine companions, Duke, Dottie, Muddy, Nokona and UConn.

Friends may call on Wednesday from 2-8 p.m. at Myers-Woodyard Funeral Home, 587 Main St. Groveport, OH. Additional visitation will be held Thursday 5-8 p.m. and Friday 2-8 p.m. at the Walker Funeral Home, 5155 Sylvania Ave. (west of Corey Rd.) Toledo, OH. Family will receive friends Saturday at 10 a.m., Christ the King Church, 4100 Harvest Lane, Toledo 43623, followed by Mass of the Resurrection at 11 a.m. Donations can be made in memory of Kristine Ensign to Angiosarcoma Awareness, Inc. (www.cureasc.org) and "Mission Ensign" fund at Groveport Madison High School. Kris' family would like to thank the entire Groveport Madison School District and community for the outpouring of support and for developing "Mission Ensign." Georgette, Doug and family; your courage, faith, and love in being with Kris through many years of trial are what made her an inspirational woman to others. Kris will continue to be a blessing to the many she touched. Ensign Family, I was saddened to hear of the passing of Kris. We went to ES, JR High and HS together. We lived in the same neighborhood for a decade. Kris was a great athlete but a better person. I cannot recall ever hearing her say 1 negative thing about anyone. It was an honor to be inducted into the Clay HS Hall of Fame with her on that night in 1998. She will be missed.

May she rest in peace ......... God said we should be happy when our love ones is gone but we are human and we can't help it but cry until there isn't no more tear left. God meant that when they are gone, they are free from this painful world and is free even their soul. I hope God is with her family and helping them deal with this painful situation.

I send my sincere condolences to the Ensign family. I have fond memories growing up with Kris. Her competitive spirit lives on.

To the entire Ensign family and extended family. There are no words right now to say to make this pain go away. I wish I could help ease the sadness and hurt you all feel. I do know this, anyone that was blessed to have known Kris is a better person because of her. I, 100% know this to be true for me. One of our last conversations was about Brady and how she was proud of me being such a good Mom. Although she said I would be better if I got him to like OSU instead of ND....Kris taught me the defintion of courage and bravery. Her name should be by those words in the dictionary as of now!!! I have never met anyone stronger than Kris and pretty sure I never will. I am truly blessed for the time I had with her and the memories I hold very dear to my heart. I dedicate the next chapter of my life to Kris and to becoming a more compassionate Mom, friend and family member. I plan to focus on the little things in life and to surround myself with positive energy only. Kris left behind many communities that she touched incredibly. I can only imagine how proud you all are. May God give you all the strength to get through the next few days. I love you all very much!!!

I did not have the honor of knowing her on a personal level, but I saw first hand the impact she had on so many of my fellow students as well as staff members. I have a special place in my heart for people affected by cancer. She was such a fighter, and she will never be forgotten. I am proud of our community for how they have rallied both socially and emotionally behind the Mission Ensign cause. While today is a sad day, it is certainly a day to be proud of being a cruiser. My thoughts and prayers are with Chris's family and friends. May she rest in peace.
