Larry COOK Obituary

COOK Larry Philip Larry Philip Cook passed away June 8, 2011 at the home of his son, Derek in Kirkland, WA under Hospice Care. He was born in Toledo, OH December 3, 1951 to parents John E. Sr. and Catherine Clark (Susie) Cook and lived most of his first seven years at his parents' Outfitters Camp in a then remote area on the Canadian east shore of Lake Superior. Larry was an adventurous and industrious young boy who earned much of his own spending money delivering papers, mowing lawns and shoveling snow. Week-ends were spent at Sand Beach where favorite activities included sailing, water skiing, ice boating, hunting and other outdoor sports. He attended Old Orchard grade school, graduated from Devilbiss High and received Bachelor and Masters degrees from The University of Toledo carrying a four point grade average. He joined the Libbey, Inc. purchasing department when they acquired the former Libbey-Owens-Ford flat glass plant in Shreveport, LA and after a series of other ventures, started a small company furnishing exotic woods and other special materials for Gulfstream jet aircraft in Savannah, GA. He had a private pilot's license and flew his own airplane for both business and recreation. Travels often included less often visited places like Libya, Belize and Pickle Lake in northern Ontario. He lived aboard his beloved sailboat "Gandolf" for many years in Florida and later in the state of Washington where he was a jack-of-all-trades kind of guy donating many hours to others in need including the Whidbey Island Senior Center and Deer Lake Park. He will be greatly missed. Larry was preceded in death by his mother, Catherine C. Cook; sister, Lynn Cook Patterson, Independence, MO and survived by sons, Derek (Erin), Kirkland, WA, Justin, Sammamish, WA; father, John E. Sr. (Rose), Toledo; brothers, John Cook Jr. (Karen), Sand Creek, MI and James R. Cook, Ft., Lauderdale, FL; nieces, Lisa AnnCook, Ottawa Lake, MI, Kristi Veitch (Alex), Overland Park, KS, Kelly Walther (Tom), Liberty, MO; nephew, Michael Juhasz and cousins, Nancy Stutesman (Ron), League City, TX, Donald Clark (Jerie), Somers, MT, David Clark (Marcie), Payson, AZ, Dennis Clark (Margie), Gig Harbor, WA. Private services will be held in Clinton, WA on Whidbey Island and it is suggested tributes be made to Evergreen Hospice, 12822 124th Lane NE, Kirkland, WA 98034, or a charity of the donor's choice. Note: Smoking has caused three premature and unnecessary deaths in this family of six. Please don't let it happen to you!

Ah, Larry - it broke my heart to see your obit. I stared at the photo and recognized the smile. We met in chemistry class where you and your "partner in crime," Tom Draper, sometimes caused a little too much excitement! High school "bad boy" but you could be so charming. You were my date for homecomming junior year. We only saw each other a few times after school - then went our separate ways. I've thought of you often over the years - always with a smile. My hope is that you had a happy life. My wish is that you are at peace and enjoying your next adventure.
Love, Jennie
