Sr. M. Bernetta SKORKA OSF

M. SKORKA Obituary

SKORKA, OSF Sister M. Bernetta 1919 - 2010 Sister M. Bernetta Skorka died on April 9, 2010, at Rosary Care Center where she lived for the past 35 years. The former Mabel Skorka was born to John and Doria (St. Martin) Skorka on March 10, 1919 in Crookston, MN. She entered the convent on August 22, 1933 from Holy Cross Parish in Minneapolis, MN. Sister Bernetta made her first vows as a Sylvania Franciscan on August 18, 1940 and her final vows on August 18, 1946. Sister Bernetta taught elementary school for almost 35 years. She taught at Catholic schools in Ohio, Michigan and Minnesota. In 1975, when the Sisters opened Rosary Hall, the retirement home for the Sisters, Sister Bernetta became the sacristan for the Chapel and carried out this ministry for 26 years. She delighted in decorating the Chapel for the special feasts and occasions, and was always planning how to make things even more beautiful for the next celebration. If she had a motto for her work it was, "Cleanliness and order are next to godliness." Sister Bernetta spent the last 9 years at Rosary Care Center in Third Age Ministry where she prayed for the community and the many needs of the world. She will be remembered for her quick wit and ready smile as well as a sense of hospitality to all those who came to Rosary Care Center. She will be missed by her Sisters in community and her family. She will be welcomed home at 6:00 p.m. on Tuesday, April 13, 2010, in a special ceremony in Our Lady Queen of Peace of Chapel at the Motherhouse of the Sylvania Franciscans. A liturgy celebrating her life will be held at 4:30 p.m. on Wednesday, April 14, 2010 in the Chapel. Donations and memorials may be sent to the Sisters of St. Francis, Sylvania, OH. Arrangements made by Thomas I. Wisniewski Funeral Home, Toledo, OH.
