M. Tomczak Obituary
Sister M. Alfreda Tomczak, 91, a Sister of St. Francis, Sylvania, Ohio, died Sunday, October 30, 2005, at Rosary Care Center, Sylvania, Ohio.
She was born Leocadia Tomczak on July 5, 1914, to Thomas and Josephine (Wisner) Tomczak in Superior, WI. At age 16, she entered the Sisters of St. Francis, Sylvania, Ohio on August 16, 1930, from St. Adalbert Parish in Superior, WI. Her final vows were professed on August 18, 1937.
Sister Alfreda earned an A. A. (Equiv.) in Elementary Education from Toledo College, Toledo, OH; a B.A.B.S.E. in Education/Math from Mary Manse College, Toledo, OH; an M.S. in Home Economics from Drexel University, Philadelphia, PA and a Certificate in Dietary Administration from Catholic Hospital Association. Sister held permanent Teaching Certificates in Ohio and Minnesota.
Sr. Alfreda began her fifty plus years as an elementary school teacher at Nativity School, Toledo, OH. She taught in several Ohio schools including: St. Casimir School, Youngstown; St. Mary Magdalene School, Rossford; St. Clare Academy and St. Francis Early Education Center operated by the Sisters of St. Francis, Sylvania. She taught Home Economics for five years at Central Catholic High School, Toledo. In Minnesota, she taught at St. John the Baptist School, New Brighton and at Immaculate Conception in Minneapolis from 1943 to 1955 and again from 1974 until 1988. Sister Alfreda returned to the Motherhouse in Sylvania, Ohio in 1988, where she served with the Business Office Staff until 1993, when she began her Third Age Prayer Ministry in Rosary Care Center.
Sister Alfreda leaves several nieces to cherish her memory, Faith (Harold) Gorang, Long Beach, CA; Joan (Charles) Dain, Norwich, NY and Judy (Mike) Vrklan, Arlington, MN; her nephew, Bernard Tomczak, Superior, WI; many dear friends and her Sisters in Community.
A welcoming service will be held at the Motherhouse of the Sisters of St. Francis, Sylvania, Ohio on Tuesday, November 1, 2005, at 6:00 p.m. The Mass of Christian Burial will take place in Queen of Peace Chapel, Sylvania, Ohio on Wednesday, November 2, 2005, at 4:00 p.m. Memorial contributions may be made to the Sisters of St. Francis, Sylvania, Ohio.
