Marie Muskala Obituary

MUSKALA

Sister Marie, OSF 1915-2013

Sister Marie Muskala (Sr. Bede) entered life on March 1, 1915, and eternal life on February 21, 2013. She died at Rosary Care Center where she had been a resident for 12 years. She was born in Minneapolis, Minnesota to Albert and Rosalia Muskala and entered the convent to become a Sister of St. Francis when she was 13 years old. She attended high school in Sylvania and professed her first vows on August 16, 1933, and her final vows on August 17, 1936. She attended De Sales College in Toledo, Ohio where she received a B.S.E degree and Notre Dame University in South Bend, Indiana where she received a M.S. degree in Math.

Most of Sister Marie's 80 years of ministry were spent teaching math in secondary schools in Hamtramck, Michigan (St. Ladislaus); Sandusky, Ohio (St. Mary's); Sylvania, Ohio (St. Clare Academy); Oregon, Ohio (Cardinal Stritch) and Toledo (Central Catholic). Sister also was a principal of schools in Cincinnati, Crestline and Sylvania, Ohio. From 1977 to 2000 she worked at Holy Cross Hospital in Detroit, Michigan in Pastoral Care and as a Medical Records Clerk.

Though she was born in Minnesota, Sister Marie spent many years in ministry in Detroit and became an avid Tigers, Lions and Red Wings fan. She loved to read and was especially interested in books on theology. She had several educational and travel opportunities as a result of grants. She loved to travel and did so with family and friends. She often kept a log of her travels which she shared with her fellow travelers. When she was able, she enjoyed many day trips with the other residents of Rosary Care Center. Her sense of humor got her into and out of many situations.

Sister Marie will be missed by her niece, Sister M. St. Anthony Chrzanak, OSF; her sister, Mary Jane Partyka (Stan); her brother, Peter Muscala, and many nieces and nephews. Her sister, Sister M. Rose Angela Muskala, OSF, preceded her in death in August, 2011.

There will be a Welcoming for Sister Marie in Our Lady Queen of Peace Chapel at the Motherhouse of the Sisters of St. Francis in Sylvania from 6:00-8:00 p.m. on Thursday, February 28, 2013. Her funeral liturgy will be 4:00 p.m. on Friday, March 1, 2013, preceded by visitation throughout the day. Interment will be in Porta Coeli Cemetery on the campus of the Sisters. Memorial contributions may be made to the Sisters of St. Francis, Sylvania, Ohio.

I was in Sr. Bede's algebra class at St. Clare Academy in 1960. Unfortunately I was one of those mathematically challenged students she couldn't get through to. I can only smile as I remember the -100 I got on a test. I have her and her family in my thoughts and prayers -- especially her niece as I was in her class. Pax et bonum, Sr. Bede!

Many happy memories of freshman algebra in Sister Mary Bede's class at CCHS in 1961-2. Her enthusiasm for math was contagious and sparked my lifelong interest for it. She is in my prayers.

Every morning i put on music and we would pretend to dance. Well one day we will meet again and will dance forever until then she will be greatly missed.

The family of Sister Bede has my deepest sympathy. I remembered her from Cardinal Stritch High School. I was in the first class of 1965.
