Marjorie A. VanDeusen
Marjorie Ann Jayne VanDeusen, affectionately known as "Pudge," passed peacefully on April 24, 2025.
Marjorie was born in Painesville, Ohio, on January 11, 1928, to Jennie and Justin Jayne. She grew up in the headlands of Mentor, Ohio, with her two sisters, Barb (Childs) and Justine (Longbons).
Pudge played several sports in high school, with badminton being her favorite. After graduating from high school in 1945, she did secretarial work at various businesses.
She married Bill VanDeusen on July 10, 1948. They then moved to Albion, Michigan, where Bill attended Albion College. They returned to Mentor in 1954 where bill worked in the education field and they could be close to family and friends. Those years included watching their son, Tom, participate in several sports at Mentor High School and then football at Miami University in Oxford, Ohio.
Thanksgiving was always a special holiday for Pudge. For years, her sister, Justine, would host the family gathering. There were times there were more than 40 people attending. Mom made her infamous (and still to this day) cauliflower layered salad.
Pudge and Bill moved to Toledo in 1968 to pursue a career working with Jostens. Bill became a scholastic salesman, with Pudge running the office.
Marjorie loved playing golf. They were members at Heatherdowns and Toledo Country Club. She also would play matches in the Toledo Women's Distirct Golf Association. She played in a bowling league in the fall and would sit in on a few bridge hands after lunch.
Pudge was a master organizer. A label for everything. She also loved putting picture albums together so we all could reminisce.
Other hobbies included jigsaw puzzling, playing solitaire and reading.
Pudge and Bill enjoyed traveling. They had a home on Traverse Bay in Michigan. They spent a few weeks in the spring on Ft. Myers Beach.
Left to cherish her memory is her son, Tom; his wife, Nancee; and their children, Brittany (Scott) Hauptman and Kerri (Dan Veltre) VanDeusen; also, great-grandchildren, Tanner and Ryan Maree.
She wanted to thank all her nieces and nephews for keeping in touch, especially Jaynie (Tom) Thompson, who would call her weekly and come from Mentor to visit and take her to lunch.
A celebration of life is being planned at a later date. We hope to have family and friends join us to toast her at her favorite restaurant, Lomas Lindas.
