Marjorie ZALEWSKI Obituary

ZALEWSKI Marjorie Halpin Marjorie Halpin Zalewski, 78, of Point Place / Shoreland passed away after a courageous battle against melanoma on Friday, October 14th at 7:05 p.m. at Hospice of Northwest Ohio Perrysburg Center. Born January 28, 1933, in Toledo, she was the daughter of Donald Cass, Sr., and Blanche (Welter) Halpin. She married Chester P. Zalewski July 23, 1967. Margie was a graduate of Notre Dame Academy, 1951. She earned her Bachelor of Education degree from the University of Toledo, 1955, a Master of Education degree from Boston College, 1960. She was a longtime member of St. John the Baptist Catholic Church in Point Place and served on their school board. Margie was preceded in death by her parents and a brother, Donald C. Jr. (Susan) Halpin. She was a teacher in Toledo Public Schools for 35 years. She loved teaching; she loved children, and any student would remember her talents and creativity in the classroom. She taught at Warren, Sherman, Longfellow, Edgewater and Ottawa River Schools. She was rewarded the Martha Holden Jennings Award for mathematics in 1978. Her commitment to teaching was demonstrated through her leadership in a variety of textbook, curriculum, and proficiency committees throughout her career. She was published in the "Ohio Journal of the English Language Arts," and was a member of the Lucas County Retired Teachers Association. In retirement, Margie never lost a zeal for life, and "Marjorie's Kitchen" became a source of entries into the Ohio State Fair, including candies, confections, cakes, jams, jellies, pies, entrees, appetizers, soups, and Spam. Over the past years Margie has won over 10 Best of Shows and 60 First Places with her entries. She had several featured articles in The Blade with her award winning recipes and was published in "Quick & Easy Country Cooking." Before and after these entries, friends and family became tasters, and there was obvious joy in the sharing moments, delighting in her talents. Her generosity was experienced as she would share a gift with many friends and family: a simple box of her excellent candies, adorned with the seal "From the Kitchen of Marjorie Zalewski." Margie was president 3 times of her Delta Kappa Gamma Chapter (Beta Omicron) and president of the Toledo Area Council. She belonged to AOPi Sorority, where she served as Treasurer and Gourmet Club Chairman. She was a Charter Member of the Red Hatters of Toledo. She served eight years on the Lucas County Mental Health and Recovery Services Board. She was also a long-time supporter of The National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI), the Northwest Ohio Psychiatric Hospital's Family Group, and was a facilitator for Parents Helping Parents. Her many memberships and affiliations include the Notre Dame Academy Alumni Association, Toledo Federation of Teachers, SAMAGAMA Club of Presidents, the University of Toledo Alumni Association, and the Boston College Alumni Association. Left to miss her sadly: her husband, Chester; her son, Paul Zalewski of Toledo; her daughters, Rosemary of Chicago, Illinois, and Carol Ann (Kris) Honeywell of Columbus, Ohio. Her enjoyable ways will be missed by her siblings, James W (Joni) Halpin of Westerville, Ohio, William Thomas (Geri) of Sebring, Florida, Barbara (Duane) Adamczak of Toledo, John Halpin of Dunedin, Florida, and Philip (Fr Donald P.) Halpin, OFMConv, of Mount Saint Francis, Indiana. Also surviving are many nieces and nephews. Friends and family will be received Monday, October 17, 2011 from 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. for visitation at David R. Jasin - Hoening Funeral Home, 5300 Summit at 126th St, Toledo, Ohio. Summit St., Toledo, Ohio in Point Place prior to the Mass of the Christian Burial which will immediately follow at 10 a.m. with Fr. Don Halpin officiating. Burial will be at Resurrection Cemetery. My sincere sympathy to Marjorie's family. I'm one of the Skeldon's that she didn't see often but we caught up on things when we did. I always kept up with cooking awards. My thoughts and prayers are with you and your family.

My deepest sympathy to all her family and friends. I proudly served with her on the LCMHRS Board. She was a great champion for our consumers. I also loved her great desserts! She was always willing to share in her talents. We had great discussions on the variety of flavors, spices and special ingredients that made her recipes "award winners". She was a true fighter in every aspects of her life. May God Bless.

To the family of Mrs Z she was one of the greatest teachers I had ever had .She started out as a sub and ended up being our regular teacher at edgewater. All these years I never forgot the help and understanding that she gave all of us during the school year.
