Mark Borden Obituary

Mark William Borden

October 29, 1964 - January 31, 2024

Mark W. Borden, 59, passed away peacefully at George Washington University Hospital on January 31, 2024. Mark was born in Toledo, OH, on October 29, 1964, and attended St. John's Jesuit Preparatory High School, graduating in 1983. He earned a bachelor of science in physics at Xavier University in Cincinnati, OH, while in the Air Force ROTC program, and was commissioned as a Second Lieutenant upon graduation.

Mark completed his master's degree in physics at Notre Dame University, South Bend, IN, in 1989, and began his career serving the United States as an officer and later as a civilian employee of the Department of Defense. His career took him around the world; he served in Kuwait, Saudi Arabia, Bosnia, Panama, South Korea, and finally, the National Capitol Region, with stops at Air Force bases in California, Texas, and Maryland, along the way. He was honorably discharged from the Air Force with the rank of Major. As a keen analyst, Mark's work on national security issues was vital to our country's safety, and he earned innumerable awards and commendations throughout his 30-plus year career.

He was preceded in death by his parents, William and Aveline (Michalski) Borden, and is survived by his brothers and sister, Michael (Christine), Mary Jo (Larry Connin), Patrick (Lynn), and Timothy; his nieces; and nephews, Christopher (Saundra), Katelin Amerson (Paul), Thomas Connin, Erin, Emily Harris (Jeremy); along with great-nieces, Annabelle, and Lillian.

Burial details for Arlington National Cemetery will be announced at a later date. The family requests that donations in Mark's memory be sent to the donor's charity of choice or to the U. S. Air Force Aid Society: https://portal.afas.org/donate/
