Mike Duckworth Obituary

DUCKWORTH Lewis Michael "Mike" Mike Duckworth passed away August 8, 2009, very peacefully surrounded by his family at St. Anne's Hospital where he received excellent care. Mike waited for his son, Aaron, who arrived from China in the afternoon before passing away at 7 p.m. He was born in Mt. Vernon, Ohio, on December 2, 1941, to Charles and Bernice Duckworth. He attended Mt. Vernon High School where he participated in their recent 50th reunion. Mike received his B.A. from Otterbein College in Westerville, Ohio where he was involved in sports and the Greek fraternity system. His first employment was at Port Clinton High school as basketball coach and science teacher. In 1966, Mike was hired by the City of Toledo, in the Department of Urban Renewal. Along the way, Mike received his M.A. in Public Administration and eventually became Assistant City Manager and retired as Director of Community Development in 1988. During retirement, Mike stayed active by being involved in civic organizations, refinishing antique furniture, taking dance classes at Alfredo's, and traveling. Mike served as Chairman of the Board of Trustees at Lourdes College in Sylvania, Ohio on the Victory Center board, and on the board of The Ability Center. He enjoyed meeting with his good retired buddies from the City of Toledo. Mike took each day as it came and is thankful for having all of you along on his journey. Mike is survived by his loving family, his wife of 38 years, Sue (Burmeister); children, Robyn and Aaron; sister-in-law, Ellen, her husband Chuck, and their son, Jason; brother, Charles and his wife, Velva, of Florida, and their children, Leslie and Tony, and Leslie's daughter, Jennifer. A memorial service will be held at the Chapel at Lourdes College, 6832 Convent Blvd., Sylvania, OH, on Tuesday, August 18 at 4 p.m. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorials be made to the Victory Center, 5532 W. Central Ave., Suite B, Toledo, OH 43615. Arrangements by the Walker Funeral Home. Condolences may be shared with the family at: www.walkerfuneralhomes.com

I am so sorry for your loss. Mr. Duckworth was a special teacher of mine at Port Clinton High. He was my spanish teacher and I was especially enamored with him when he made me sargeant at arms of my spanish club only to find out later that he gave me that position so that I would keep myself in line!!! He was a special guy and I will think of him often.

Sue,
I will always remember with great fondness the days that Mike and I worked together. Memories of our monthly poker games still bring an ocassional grin, but the thing that I remember most is what a kind man Mike was. Toledo lost a fine man.

Mike was my homeroom teacher at Port Clinton High School. What a wonderful person he was. He was well liked by everyone back during his teaching career; and is still thought fondly of today. In many conversations of the "good old days" we chat about him. Bless you Mike and thank you for leaving behind so many wonderful memories. God bless you!

I had "worked" with Mike on the Greenbelt Parkway Project many years ago. He was a good man ! In a funny twist of fate, I now live in Port Clinton, and have for the last 8 years. He will be missed, but, HEAVEN has him now !!!!!
Sincerely, Louise (Reitz) Palmerton.
