Mildred Sorensen Obituary

Mildred "Millie" Evelyn (Harlett) Sorensen

Mildred Evelyn Sorensen (Harlett), or "Millie" to her friends and family, passed away peacefully on July 30th, 2022 at the age of 93.

Those who knew her would agree she was a force of nature--a born leader and a class act. Born in Fostoria, OH she attended Baldwin Wallace College and then moved to Toledo, OH where she began her career working in Human Resources first for Lamson's Department Store and then for the Toledo Scale Company. She then followed her love of art to become a Classroom Art Teacher in the Toledo Public Schools, which launched a more than 30-year career including being an Art Specialist, Assistant Principal, Principal and led to her promotion to the position of Director of Art for the entire school system. In this role she continued to work to expand access to quality arts education and to advocate for the forty art instructors she represented. Her intelligence, sincere generosity, and astute diplomacy touched the lives of countless students, teachers, colleagues, and artists. She also taught classes at the Toledo Museum of Art children's Saturday Art Program and evening classes at Monroe Community College. Millie raised two children, finished her Bachelors of Education and then went on to earn a Masters of Education, both from the University of Toledo.

After retiring she moved with her husband to Ft. Lauderdale, FL and then to The Villages Florida. Strong, brilliant, and always true to herself and her principles, she was fiercely independent until her death. Millie was an extraordinary woman, and she wanted everyone to know she truly enjoyed her wonderful friends and had a great life.

She was preceded in death by her husband, James Harlett. She is survived by her daughter, Amy (James) Vangeloff of Carmel, IN and her son, Matthew Sorensen of Jacksonville, OR as well as granddaughters, Abbey (Matthew Copeland) Vangeloff, Kate (Nathan Green) Vangeloff and the Harlett family.

In lieu of flowers the family requests if you want to honor Millie - you make a donation to a local cat rescue or to a school arts program.

I am so sorry for your loss. My husband Bruce worked with Millie for many years - the Music and Art Departments at the Toledo Public Schools. He often would comment on those good years at TPS! We did keep in contact with Millie throughout the years after we moved to Florida too.
Bruce passed July 3rd of this year so I am sure they are both reminiscing about those good old days and probably planning another event.
Sincerely, Georgia Jacobson
