Norman Geesey Obituary

(NEWS ARTICLE) MONTPELIER, Ohio -- Norman A. Geesey, a funeral director who worked since age 14 for the mortuary he eventually owned, died Saturday in Community Hospitals and Wellness Centers, Montpelier, after suffering a heart attack. He was 73.

Mr. Geesey and his wife, Lorna, were business partners since 1992 with James Thompson and his wife, Janice, with the Geeseys operating the Wilson-Geesey Funeral Home and the Thompsons operating the Thompson Funeral Home, both in Montpelier.

"Everyone regarded them with utmost esteem, and we always had good feelings between each other," Mr. Thompson said.

Mr. Geesey was a teen looking for something to do when neighbor and mortician Howard Wilson hired him to mow the lawn, shovel snow, and do odd jobs at the Wilson Funeral Home. Mr. Geesey drove the mortuary's ambulance service when he had his driver's license, and he was assigned death calls.

A 1956 graduate of Montpelier High School, he attended Bowling Green State University on his way to Cincinnati College Of Mortuary Science, from which he received a bachelor's degree. Mr. Geesey was licensed as an embalmer and funeral director in November, 1960, and later received a license in Michigan. He eventually became a business partner of Mr. Wilson. Mr. Wilson sold the funeral home to the Geeseys in the early 1970s.

"He didn't have many outside interests besides serving the community and doing his best," Mr. Thompson said.

Mr. Geesey was patient with the families he dealt with, and his own. "Whatever people saw in public is what we had at home -- his gentleness and kindness and always making time for you," his daughter Kelley Thompson said.

He was honored as Montpelier Citizen of the Year in 2006. Mr. Geesey was on the boards of the Montpelier Public Library and Glenview subsidized apartments. He was a former president of the Montpelier Chamber of Commerce.

"He was all about Montpelier," his daughter said.

Surviving are his wife, Lorna, whom he married Aug. 19, 1960, daughters, Greta DeGroff and Kelley Thompson, and two grandchildren.

Visitation will be from 2-8 p.m. Wednesday in the Wilson-Geesey Funeral Home. Services will be at 11 a.m. Thursday in First United Methodist Church, Montpelier, which he attended.

The family suggests tributes to the church's air-conditioning fund.
