Ollie Collins passed from this life on September 28, 2015, at his home at the age of 93. He was born in Kentucky on July 22, 1922, to Shell and Eva (Whittaker) Collins. Ollie was in the CCC in 1942, and then became a Private First Class in the 13th Army/Air Force, 11th Airdrome Squadron and honorably discharged on February 5, 1946. He served in both New Guinea and the Philippines and earned the following for his service: an Asiatic Pacific Theater Ribbon with two Bronze Stars; the Philippine Liberation Ribbon with one Bronze Star; the American Theater Ribbon; a Good Conduct Medal; and a Victory Medal. He served in ammunitions and was responsible for loading Big Bob onto the Enola Gay that was dropped on Hiroshima.

After his military service he was employed with the Chesapeake and Ohio Railway Company until his retirement. He was also a volunteer fireman with the Millbury Fire Department.

Ollie married his loving wife, Ella Gibson Collins, on April 13, 1950. They were married for 61 years until her death in 2011.

He attended the Neighborhood Freewill Baptist Church and Hope Baptist Church. He will be missed by his lifelong church friends. He was a lifelong member of the Disabled American Veterans.

Ollie will be remembered for his gift of striking up a conversation with even total strangers and regaling them with his wartime recollections.

Ollie was also preceded in death by his brother, Otto Collins; sisters, Ojie Spencer, Omie Spencer, Okie Spencer, and Elizabeth Fraley. He is survived by five children, Judith (Dennis) Williams, Dewey (Carol) Collins, Ella Mae (Michael) Kajfasz, Garry Collins, O. Eugene (Wiesja) Collins; brother, Raleigh Collins; 11 surviving grandchildren, Robert, Dawn (Jeff), Dewey II (Deb), Andrea (John), Jessica (Chris), Luke, Amanda (Ben), Melody, Aaron (Mandee), Bobbie Jean, Jennifer (Nic); 19 great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandson and many nieces and nephews.

Visitation will be held on Friday, October 2, 2015 from 3-8 p.m. at the David R. Jasin-Hoening Funeral Home, 5300 Summit St., Toledo, Ohio 43611. Disabled American Veterans Service will start at 7 p.m. Funeral Services will be private. Ollie's final resting place will be at Restlawn Memorial Park.

Memorial contributions can be made to the Disabled American Veterans, 2802 Airport Highway, Toledo, Ohio 43609.
