Here is another year gone by and still thinking about you Paul. Now I´m sick with COVID pneumonia. Be glad you are missing all this sickness. Our country is not in good shape, but I made it during my hospital stay. Was touch and go one night with 3 AFIBS, but I´m home.

Not sure why my mind was thinking of Paul, but It was so I looked him up on the internet. I didn't know he was no longer with us. A huge saddness swept over me. I watched Paul play every weekend when he was with the Flint Generals. He was by far my favorite player no matter what team he was playing on. I was just a young girl back then, but always thought he was the cutest player ever! My thoughts are with his family and I hope you know how many people loved him. RIP Paul.

Paul Tantardini was a legend in every IHL city and will never be forgotten. Tanner played the game with heart, grit, tenacity, and passion.
Turner Cup Championships in 1975, 1978, 1982, and 1983 speak volumes about Paul as a player, teammate, and person.
I grew up watching IHL hockey in Muskegon, Michigan and we were fortunate to have Paul in a Muskegon uniform for a portion of the 1979-80 IHL regular season. During that 79-80 IHL campaign, Tanner registered an impressive 16 points and 108 penalty minutes in only 15 games for Muskegon.
My thoughts and prayers will continue to be with Paul, his family, friends, and his many fans across the United States and Canada.

Tony,
I am so sorry you are still hurting for your father. He was a great person and admired by his fans and still is thought about often in our daily lives. I am thankful that I had the opportunity to watch him play and converse with him. If I had a magic wand, I would bring him back just one more time to let you know he is very proud of you and watches down on you daily. Keep that chin up and keep the memories of him close in your heart. I feel your pain as I was 33 when my father passed and I miss him more than life at times. I am now 64 and wonder where all the time has gone, but I still have a special place in my heart and sweet memories of my daddy. Take care and I wish you well. Patti Powell, Sandusky, OH

Here I am thinking of Tanner and wondering how his family is doing. Tony I hope you are making dad proud! He loved his children and he is greatly missed. While attending a Walleye hockey game a man was there in your dad's shirt! Oh how memories flowed of fights on the ice and Tanner's big smile! I touched the jersey and best thing was guy didn't even know anything about Tanner. Wow, I would have paid for that shirt just to frame and put on my wall in my living room!!!

I grew up loving the Kalamazoo Wings. And I remember no other opposing player like I remember Paul. The first player I remembered seeing without a helmet. I just now googled Paul's name and came across his death notice. So to his family his fans and the city of Toledo I express my deepest sympathy. I hope the thought of someone like me not being a Goaldiggers fan but remembering Paul so vividly even now some 30 + years later shows just how many lives he touched can help bring you all some peace. RIP Paul.

Thanks for the memories Mr. Tantardini, you are a legend in my book! RIP

I grew up in Toledo and Cherish the Memories of those games. Once in my teens I saw Paul on the Golf Course at Ottawa Park. I came home that day and told my friends about it as If I had seen Elvis or McJagger ! That's how popular Paul was with the fans! My son now plays collegiate hockey and he is of course # 16

I was driving listening to hockey tonight and out of the blue thought of Paul Tandardini. I grew up in Kalamazoo as a Wings fan and no other player made such an impression that 30 years later I'd go home and google his name. I was deeply saddened to find out about Paul's death, and I hope his family knows that he could impact a 14 year old rooting for the other team forever. Rest in Peace

I played for the Goaldiggers during 1980-81 season. Paul Tantardini was an amazing person. Soft spoken and thoughtful he was the nicest guy and best teammate that I had during 13 years as a player. He was so different from the tough guy that he was on the ice. When I read that he had passed away I couldn't believe it and I am saddened.
This is really too bad. Take care Tanner!! Sincerely, John Glynne

Merry Christmas to everyone who reads this Guest Book remembering the good times when the Goal Diggers ruled the ice! It will soon be 2 years since Paul left us and every time I come to Toledo, I always say hi to him and just still don't understand his "untimely" death but I guess that will always be a mystery. My condolences still go out to his family and friends that loved and adored him. May he still be resting in peace and may all of your hearts be at peace during this time of the year and always.

I was privileged to coach Paul during the early 80s when the 'Diggers were Turner Cup Champion teams. No player personified the meaning of "team player" more than Tanner. He was the heart and soul of those teams because the only thing he wanted was to contribute to his teammates' success with his unselfish devotion
to the game he loved. His gentle spirit will be missed. Tanner, you fought a good fight, and I'm glad you were a part of my life. Our hearts ache for your loss, Ruthie, along with your children. May God give you peace during this time. Bill & Jeris Inglis

My sincere condolences to Paul's family. I met him when I was a teenager and lived across the street from him on Chestnut Street. He gave me a great interest and excitement in hockey. The landlord of the house he lived in would only rent to Goldiggers. I met several of them, Ted Turner, Loren Mullican (sp?) but no one stands out in my mind like Paul. God Bless him. His memory will live forever.

How ironic it was the day I read of Paul's passing. When I read the headlines the first name that came to mind was his, no different than when he played hockey and I would read the game recaps and look for his name first. Paul will be remembered for his days of playing but I hope he will also be remembered for what was in his obituary " Paul was a generous , thoughtfull and hard working man ". These are what matters in a persons life, the impressions one leaves that makes a difference in anothers life.

Ruthie,Jessie&Tony,
My thoughts and prayers are with you at this time. Paul was an idol of mine. I watched him on the ice and always said he was the greatest. As I young girl I would wait for him after the games so I could get pictures and autographs. He would always make me melt with those beautiful green eyes and that smile, I will always remember that smile. He always made time for the fans.
When I found out Paul had moved in around the block from me I was so excited. I always made sure I was at my girlfriends house that lived across the street. I remember seing Jessie and Tony as little kids running around the neighborhood. I came to the house one holloween dressed as a hockey player with a black eye and missing front teeth and Paul came to the door saying "I hope I didn't do that" I will miss him.
The last time I saw Paul was at a Toledo Storm game. I remember thinking he still has the eyes that could make me melt.
My thoughts and prayers are with Pauls family

Ruthie,Jessie,& Tony: I am truely sorry for the loss of Paul. Paul was a man with a giant's heart. The problem was he didn't want anyone to see him that way. He never fooled me. I have worked with Paul for many years and there wasn't a story that I haven't heard. One of my most memorable thoughts of Paul will always be when he took my grandson out on the ice with him on the night he was getting honored at the Storm game. My deepest sympathy to Paul's family
I never had the chance to see Paul play the game he loved so much but over the years working with him I had the chance to hear him tell his stories somtimes more then once... The thing I wish to remember the most about Paul is how much I have laughed over the last five years...Paul had a good heart I will miss him .

Some of the Best of Times was playing Hockey in Toledo 1981-82,winning the League, the Turner Cup,& playing with teammates like Paul. The first day I met Paul,he was wearing a flannel long sleeve shirt, buttoned to the top & he had all of his Hockey gear on,the name of his cat"digger"was written on the handle of his Hockey stick.Paul's first words to me was "hope you can throw em". Paul was full of practical jokes, once after hockey practice,I went to get dressed,to find out my favorite Bruce Springsteen shirt had the sleeves cut off,the next day my t-shirt was cut in half.Tanner thought no one knew it was him,(Chuck the trainer informed me it was Paul)So,on game day (we all had to wear dress shirts & pants). I got back at Tanner, his dress pants were now shorts, his dress shirt was now sleeveless. You should have seen him leave the arena that night.Ruthie,Our deepest love, thoughts & prayers are with you,Jessie & Tony.May God help you get through this,we will miss Paul.He never realized how many people loved to watch him play hockey and how popular he was.How sad, many memories,we had some great vacation times together. We are here for you. As both the Goaldiggers first "radio voice" (along with Len Hardman) and a team P. A. announcer for one season, I have always felt proud to be a very small part of that era. I was supposed to help "sell hockey" and that turned out to be an easy job. All I had to do to increase the level of excitement was say the name, "Paul Tantardini!"
Every one in every I.H.L. arena knew that name. Not just because he was a "tough guy," but because they knew Paul was one player who would give his all for his team and fans every time he skated on the ice.
There was something else, too. That amazing smile and the charisma it brought to the forefront.
When Paul smiled girls' hearts would flutter. And when he smiled at all those kids lined up outside the locker room, each of them seemed to think they had found a new "best friend." Perhaps they really had, too, because for all the love Paul received from Toledo hockey fans, he gave back in full measure.
The days of the Toledeo Goaldiggers were happy ones for local sports fans, and that team also dominated the thoughts of the fans of other cities in the old "I" as well. And no one more personified those days than Paul.
I'm glad I knew him.

A heartfelt thank you to the entire Tantardini family. Thank you for sharing such a special man with all of Toledo during his life and in his passing. Upon hearing the news, I was devastated. Immediately, I saw myself at ten years old again and the man whom I idolized above any Tiger Beat poster boy was skating, and checking, and scoring with that same smile that he wore while meeting fans after so many games. I thought about how many memories I have from those days and realized how special they were, but now that I have had the privilege of being able to share others' memories I am even more grateful for them. My most sincere sympathy to your family, and a wish that the words on these many pages bring you some comfort. Paul made a life long hockey lover out of this "little girl" and while there will be other teams for me to root for - there will never be another Paul Tantardini.

Paul thankyou for all the memories of growing up with hockey in our lives as children. Going to the Goaldigger games and hockey clinics as a youngster were a cherished memory that will last a lifetime. And whenever the announcer would say those words: "PAUL TANTARDINI" there wasn't a person sitting in the Sports Arena...everyone was standing on the seats and falling all over eachother...WOW! Those were some good times and it wouldn't have been the same without you Paul...Thankyou Paul for all the memories and rest in peace my friend...but remember I think you'll have to leave the gloves on up there the big guy won't let you "DROP THE GLOVES" with any of the other angels:)

To the Tantardini family, we would like to express our saddness and sorrow over your recent loss. We want you to know that our prayers and thoughts are with you at this time. We remember Paul as a young man who brought so much excitement to the Toldeo area and a new love for the game of hockey that had been lost for many yrs. We so many times get cought up into our own lives that we forget that public figures have personal lives and aren't exempt from everyday life. We forget that even though Paul seemed larger than life to some of us, he had everyday issues and tasks that made him human. We all have lost a part of Toledo History, the kind you only see and know if you knew Paul Tantardini. Paul you are and forever will be missed greatly.

Dear Ruthie, Jesse, Tony,
Knowing the pain and sorrow I am feeling for the loss of Paul, I pray that God be with you and comfort you in your time of need. One of the greatest joys of summer vacation as a kid was going to my Dad's company picnic knowing he worked with Ruthie and that Tanner would be there. A volleyball game, blowing up balloons, you name it. Anything for the kids. Alot of people know him for being a winner on the ice, 4 cup rings are proof of that. But a legend is not built on the ice alone. You will be deeply missed and you touched more lives than you'll ever know.
God Bless

Paul was and always will be my greatest hero. I can't imagine what life as a kid in Toledo growing up, playing hockey during the 70's and 80's would have been like without him. I'd like to offer my most sincere condolences to Paul's family. Back in a time when the people of Toledo didn't have much to cheer about he and the guys did something most thought was impossible...fill the arena and bring a championship home. Who can forget the party downtown that night waiting for the team to drive back from Saginaw? It's hard to put into words, I guess you just had to be there and experience it. I don't think it would have happened without "the Tanner."
When we leave this life the only thing left behind that really matters are the people we touched and the lives we made better. Looking over the guest book I'm not surprised to see Paul was a winner in the arena of life too.

Toledo Hockey was never the same after Paul came here to play, he was an icon in this town and around the leauge. Paul brought life into this town with his play on the ice and his warm generosity off the ice.
God bless you Paul, and may you rest in peace. The angels will be chanting "TANNER, TANNER, in heaven.

Our thoughts and prayers go out to the Tantardini Family.
A monumental factor in Toledo hockey Paul Tantardini was. From "way back when" (I still have an old popcorn box with his autograph on it in my hope chest from when I was a kid) until just recently, when he was at a game.... he was a friendly and familiar face. A hockey icon, and a Toledo hockey legend. He will truly be sadly missed.

Not since the passing of my grandmother in 2002 have I felt so sad upon hearing the news of Paul Tantardini's passing. I grew up watching the Diggers my entire childhood, and Paul was always my favorite. Even when some other new guys would come along...hot shots, you might say...they could never hold a candle to "Tanner" in my mind. He was the inspiration of my love for hockey and all the years and hard work that I have put into playing the game. I wouldnt be a hockey player or fan today if not for Paul. I had the pleasure of meeting Paul several times over the years and he was always very cordial to his fans. I still have a picture on my wall of Paul holding me in 1975 when I was 3 years old. And now it means that much more to me.
My thoughts and prayers to all of Paul's family and friends. He will be greatly, greatly missed by MANY people.

My sincere condolences to the Tantardini family.I was a teammate of Paul's in Toledo, for a short period, but my memories of a great teammate and friend will live on. You always knew Tanner "had your back covered" on and off the ice.

To the Tantardini family:
My mother Sana, sister Tina and I send our thoughts and prayers to you in this time of sadness. My father Richard, who played for Toledo in the 50s, spent many "oldtimer" games with Paul and followed his career. My father passed away in August. I imagine them playing together in the sky above us now. God Bless you all.

I was one of the lucky ones who had season tickets to those great years of Toledo Goaldiggers hockey with Paul, Juri, Doug, Ted, Ian, Jim - and the list goes on and on. My heart broke when a friend from Toledo contacted me to tell me of Paul's death. My sympathy and deepest condolences go out to his friends and family.
