May 5, 2015

Dr. Philip "Bud" Levy, age 90, of Ottawa Hills, Ohio passed away at The Toledo Hospital on Tuesday, May 5. He was born in Toledo on September 18, 1924 to Robert and Frances (Reiter) Levy.

Bud was graduated from Scott High School in 1942 and attended Toledo University, where he studied engineering before he was drafted into the Army. The Army sent Bud to City College of New York to study military engineering, and later he was shipped to England to prepare for the Normandy invasion. He served in the 95th Infantry Division as it landed at Omaha Beach, and as a sergeant he fought through the Hedgerow campaign, survived the Battle of the Bulge, and marched with Allied troops into Germany. After the war, Bud married Shirley Dolgin and shared the next 68 years of marriage partnership with her. Bud returned to college at The Ohio State University where he completed a BA in engineering, a BSC in anatomy, and a Doctor of Optometry degree. He was an honor student elected to the Beta Sigma Honorary Fraternity. For the next 52 years he practiced optometry, maintaining offices in Maumee and Swanton. He gave of himself, providing free examinations at the Miami Children's Home in Maumee and various elementary schools. He was a member of Kiwanis for over 50 years, a 32nd degree Mason and member of the Zenobia Shrine. He was a member of North Cape Yacht Club and the Toledo Club and a life member of the American Optometric Society. As a talented artist, he won several awards in Toledo Area Artists shows. He also enjoyed sailing, gardening, and music. For many years, he was active in the Toledo Repertoire Theater where he built sets and served as stage manager. He once wrote that his greatest accomplishment was getting the best wife and family possible. He is survived by his wife and children: Larry, Candace (Greg), and Michael (Shaula). He especially cherished his four grandchildren: Robert, Colleen, Adam, and David.

Friends may visit the family home on Saturday, May 9 and Sunday, May 10 from 6:30 to 9:00 p.m. The funeral service will take place at Robert H. Wick Funeral Home, 2426 North Reynolds Road at 11:00 a.m. After the interment at Eagle Point Cemetery, family and friends are invited to a luncheon at The Temple Shomer Emunim, 6453 W. Sylvania Avenue, Sylvania, Ohio. Contributions in Bud's memory may be made to The Temple Shomer Emunim or Toledo Symphony Orchestra.

On behalf on my parents, Lynn and Gert Lubell, we send our deepest condolences. Bud was a family friend when my sister Kathy and I were children. He fitted our glasses and was my father's Kiwanis brother. Later in life, he and Shirley became friends to Stevie and me.
We will miss out dinners out at the Toledo Club, wine at his home and a few good laughs.
We cherish the fact Bud was part of our lives.
