Richard Furrer Obituary

Richard Furrer

1929 - 2025

Richard "Rich" Furrer passed away peacefully on January 22, 2025, at the Ebeid Hospice Center in Sylvania, Ohio. He was 95 years old. He was born in Toledo to parents, Rudolph and Geraldine Furrer, and was a life-long resident (born and raised) in the Shoreland area.

Rich was a 1948 graduate of Whitmer High School and proudly served in the United States Army during the Korean War.

Rich thoroughly enjoyed reminiscing about the days when he was employed at The Detroit & Toledo Shoreline Railroad; sharing many stories from when he worked on the steam engines and diesel trains. He often would state that "it was hard work back then, but also that it was the best of times, too!" Rich retired after working 43 years on the railroad.

Rich was also an accomplished musician, who for decades played the "keyboard" in several bands at many different venues throughout the Toledo area. He truly loved listening, playing and talking about all different genres of music; especially music from the Big Band Era.

For many years after his retirement, Rich would drive out west to see the country; and especially liked to travel to Phoenix, Arizona. He enjoyed watching NASCAR races and Ohio State football games. He loved to read and always kept up with the daily current events around the world.

Rich is survived by his wife, Marylou; and his daughter, Shirlene (Tom) Dressel; son, Rick (Beth) Furrer; daughter-in-law, Mary Norton; along with his 5 grandchildren and 3 great-grandchildren.

Rich leaves behind a legacy of love, dedication and kindness that will forever be remembered by all whose lives he touched. He will be deeply missed. Heaven has gained a "special" Angel.

Shirlene, what a beautiful tribute to your beloved dad! You did an exceptional job in honoring him by writing this beautiful piece. It´s obvious how close you were to him and how much you loved each other. I am so sorry for your great loss.

I remember Richard, very briefly, I remember he played the accordion when my grandparents celeberated their 50th wedding anniversary at a place in Point Place called Thompsons Inn. Their names were Ida and John Schmid, who also lived in Shoreland. That's all I can remember about Richard.
He lived a long nice life. M condolences to his family. I lived on Pageland Drive growing up.
