Richard L. Schell, 97, of Whitehouse, Ohio, passed away on January 19, 2026, at Foundation Park in Toledo. He was born on January 9, 1929, in Fremont, Ohio, to Melvin and Evelyn (Wilson) Schell.

A graduate of Fremont Ross High School, Richard continued his education at Defiance College, earning a bachelor's degree in history. His commitment to service began as a Highway Patrolman. Richard's devotion to the United States of America defined much of his life. Answering the call of duty, he served with honor in the United States Army for many years, including courageous service during both the Korean and Vietnam Wars. Rising to the distinguished rank of Colonel, he embodied the values of leadership, sacrifice, and patriotism.

He is survived by his wife, Arlene Schell; daughters, Lana Wharton and Kendra (Joseph) Kaufmann; grandchildren, Kelley, Caroline, Kathleen, and Gregory; great-grandchildren, Charlotte, Emma, Andrew, Christian and Hayden; sister, Gloria Miller; and step-children, June (Russell) Young and David Slocum. He was preceded in death by his first wife, Patty Schell; parents, Melvin and Evelyn Schell; and siblings, Eileen Karcher, Betty Miller, Barbara Cicanese, and Daniel Schell.

Family and friends are invited to pay their respects on Monday, January 26, 2026, from 4:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m., with a scripture service at 6:30 p.m., at Maison-Dardenne-Walker Funeral Home, 501 Conant St., Maumee, Ohio. Funeral services will be held on Tuesday, January 27, 2026, at 11:00 a.m., in the funeral home, with military honors. Richard will be laid to rest at Ney Cemetery, in Ney, Ohio.
