Robert Mason Obituary

Robert S. Mason II

December 31, 1946 - July 5, 2025

Robert S. Mason II, of Maumee, Ohio, affectionately known as "Bob," passed away on July 5, 2025, in Hudson, Michigan, surrounded by his devoted family. Born on December 31, 1946, in Toledo, Ohio, Bob lived a life defined by service, integrity, and love. His passing, on a day marked by national celebration, was a fitting farewell for a man whose presence always brought strength, pride, and joy.

Bob was a dedicated son, a loyal brother, a beloved husband, a proud father, and a doting grandfather. He graduated from Start High School in 1964, graduated from the FBI National Academy for Police Officers at Quantico in 1978, and later earned an associate degree in criminal psychology from the University of Toledo in 1980. His distinguished career in law enforcement began in July, 1969, and spanned nearly three decades. Over the years, Bob served as a patrolman, sergeant, narcotics officer, lieutenant, and investigator in Internal Affairs. In 1986, he was appointed to the civil service position of Secretary of Police and Chief Financial Officer for the Toledo Police Department-a role he held with great honor and responsibility until his retirement in December, 1998.

Throughout his career, Bob was known not only as a respected officer but also as a man of deep character-honest, fair, and compassionate. His commanding stature belied the kindness within, and he earned the trust and admiration of colleagues and citizens alike.

Bob shared 57½ wonderful years of marriage with his beloved wife, Cathy (née Jordan). Together they built a loving family, raising their children, Alan (Sameena) Mason and Krystin Mason, and later welcoming their cherished granddaughter, Piper Clark. Bob took immense joy in being a grandfather and was known for his quiet acts of thoughtfulness-especially during the holidays, when his tradition of secretly delivering big gifts brought delight and wonder to those he loved.

In retirement, Bob remained deeply engaged in the law enforcement community, serving first as Vice President and later as President of the Policemen's Retiree Association, where he worked tirelessly to support and advocate for his fellow retired officers. He also gave back by mentoring young people through the Police Explorers program, offering guidance and wisdom that helped shape the next generation of law enforcement with integrity and compassion. Bob extended his commitment to service to his neighborhood as well, acting as Treasurer of his homeowners association for 18 years. In his free time, he remained an avid Ohio State football fan and relished the excitement of college basketball, always eager to cheer on his teams and share the thrill of the game with family and friends.

He is deeply missed by his wife, Cathy; his children, Alan and Krystin; his granddaughter, Piper; his sister, Marsha (George) Keller; his sisters-in-law, Sally (Joseph) Mason, Shelley (Michael) Kosmatak, Jennifer (Douglas) Rahe; his numerous nieces and nephews; and his beloved cats, JoDee and Remy. His legacy of love, service, and quiet strength lives on in those who were fortunate to know him.

Bob was preceded in death by his parents, Dorothy L. Mason (née Marsh) and Robert S. Mason; his brother, Joseph J. Mason; and by his niece, Kathryn D. Keller.

Family and friends are invited to gather in remembrance at Newcomer Funeral Home – Southwest Chapel, 4752 Heatherdowns Blvd, Toledo, OH 43614, on July 15, 2025, from 4:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. As we honor the life of Robert S.
