Robert McCARTNEY Obituary

MC CARTNEY Robert C. Bob McCartney, a child of God and servant of Christ, died peacefully in his home, Thursday, October 6, 2011, encircled in prayer by his wife, Fran, and their family. It was a blessing most fitting of the faith-filled life he lived. Our dad was born on March 21, 1925 in Toledo, one of 8 children, to Richard and Lucille McCartney. Raised on a small farm off Alexis Road, he carried with him through life a strong work ethic and a keen sense of right and wrong. A devoted husband and father, he lived his Catholic faith each day. Dad and Mom celebrated 65 years of Holy Matrimony this past September. Known to all as a most honorable and generous man, our dad lived and died loving his children, his wife, and our God. He was forever grateful for his early formation at the hands of the good Sisters at Blessed Sacrament School. In 1943 at the age of seventeen, Dad traded his high school education for service to our country, enlisting in the U. S. Navy. He sailed aboard the U.S.S. Baltimore, seeing action throughout the South Pacific in World War II. Returning home, Dad married the love of his life, Frances Steuer, and together they embraced their dream of a large family. An ambitious craftsman with an eye for opportunity, Dad learned the concrete business and started his own company. Later, he teamed with two other contractors to form Consolidated Concrete Construction, a highly respected outfit that served the area for over thirty years. From his farm upbringing he had a love of horses that lasted his whole life, highlighted by his success as a Thoroughbred racehorse owner and breeder. From "Rock Bottom Farm" on Albon Road, to the home he built near Oak Openings that Mom called, "The Homestretch", everyone was welcomed. When you talked to Dad, he made you feel like you were the only one in the room. He worked as hard as the concrete he poured to provide a Catholic education for nine kids - 12 years for each one. Raised during the Great Depression, Dad had a kind heart for those in need. Stories continue to surface of Dad's acts of kindness over the years, incidents previously known only to those who he helped. Bob McCartney's spirit lives on through his dear wife, Fran; children: Karen Trotter (Joe), Bridget Irmen (Pat), Peggy Goetz (Bill), Denny (Karen), Mike (Molly), Rob (Sue), Mary Crown (Brad), Dan (Patti), Todd (Marianne); 43 grandchildren: Chris, Brian, Stephanie, Whitney, Polly, Shayne, Sam, Tad, Nick, Dan, Mike, Matt, Meghan, Mary, Callie, Shannon, Kevin, Tom, Bridget, Dan, Mary Pat, Vince, Pete, Maggie, Riley, Anna, Jessie, Kate, Grace, Nate, Kyle, Annie, Susan, Francie, John, George, Charlie, Henry, Emily, Will, Ben, Caroline, Claire and 24 great grandchildren. Dad's surviving siblings are: Nan Reno (Larry), Larry (Joanne) and Sue Pool (Ken). He was preceded in death by his brothers, Bill (Alice) and Dick (Phyllis), and sisters, Pat, and Kate Pollock (Vic). Visitation will be Sunday, October 9, 2:00 - 8:00 p.m. at the Coyle Funeral Home, 1770 S. Reynolds Rd., with a Rosary service at 7:00 p.m. Services will begin at 9:30 a.m. Monday, October 10 in the mortuary, followed by a Mass of Christian Burial 10a.m. at St. Joan of Arc Catholic Church. Interment at Resurrection cemetery. Dad's favorite charities were: St. Joan of Arc Church, Fellowship of Catholic University Students (FOCUS), Sisters of the Visitation, Parkside Blvd., and St. Vincent de Paul Society. My deepest sympathies to the McCartney family.
Although I haven't seen any of the McCartney family since the thoroughbred racing days, I remember Bob's homebred Albon Rose and how proud he was of her.
I stopped by the homeplace on Albon Rd. a time or two, way back then, and was always greeted so warmly.
Bob was genuine and true and one of those people you don't come across too often anymore.
May you find comfort in the wonderful memories and legacy of your dear father.

Knowing the McCartney families is such a blessing. I remember the first time I met Robert. I was delivering a package to his door & he asked me (as he was reaching into his pocket) "can I give you something for your service?" I thought "How sweet, what a thoughtful man". I just replied "No thank you, this is my job, have a great day" Didn't see him much, but he always had a smile & a wave "hello" when I did see him. He will be missed. You are in our prayers.... I meet Bob through a good friend of mine. I found later that Bob and Fran's son Denny had worked with me at Rudolph Libbe. Little did I know that this friend's son was married to one of Bob's girls. From there, the doors were opened and I got to learn a little more of the family thru Bob. My experiences with Bob was that he was the kind of man that always had a good word for you. He was a hard worker, a loving father, a good family man, and a good Christian through his Catholic faith. (Something we should all strive to be) In otherwords, a man that was truly "old school" and we are better people for knowing him.

My wife and I send our sincere condolences to the McCartney family and have faith in knowing he'll always be with you in your memories and forever in our Lord's arms.

Dear McCartney Clan, I join you in your celebration of Life for your Husband, Father, Grandfather, Uncle, sibling and friend. If it were not for your lovely daughter, I would not have enjoyed 4 wonderful years I had at Notre Dame Academy. Blessings to you all, and what an Honor you were to our neighborhood, my own parents I know are rejoicing in heaven to be among such goodness. In the blessed name of Jesus Christ. Be well oh my soul. Our sincere condolences on the passing of Mr. McCartney. We are the current owners of your long-time home on Albon Rd, and although we never personally met your family, I did have the chance to have a long phone conversation with Bob shortly after we purchased the home in 2010. At the time, we had just had a major incident with the blacksmith shop and Bob wanted to come over and "fix it". He was such a friendly man. Your family is welcome to stop by here anytime. We often hear from the neighbors about the legacy of the McCartney family here at this farmhouse (didn't know it was called "Rock Bottom Farm) for the many years you lived here. In fact, there is still a sign painted in the barn from one of the kids saying - I WILL RETURN...maybe from around the mid-80's. Our prayers and thoughts are with you all.

I remember the first time I met Bob and Fran on their farm when I was newly engaged. I told my husband-to- be that I wanted the McCartney plan: a big family that was close to one another and God. Bob and Fran accomplished this so beautifully and humbly! It is so good to have an example of how to live--preparing ones self and family for life everlasting! Thank you Bob and Fran for showing us how it is done!

McCartney Family, Memories Live Forever
It's hard to say good-bye to someone that you love, although you know they're safe with Jesus up above.
It doesn't make a difference if they're in their later years.
It only means more memories to carry through the tears.
Don't let your selves forget, we each have numbered days.
For reasons that we do not know, God wanted it this way.
Tears wash away the pain, but it can't remove the love.
The memories live forever safe in God's hands above.
So today we give thanks for the lives we chance to share.
No matter if they're short or long, God always will be there.
In Loving Memory of a long time inspirational friend,
we send our prayers, Guy & Robin Malone & Family.

To all the McCartneys:
I gasped when I got the email from my mom that your dad had died. With his tremendous zest for life, it seemed like he might just live forever. I am so sad that I can't be there to celebrate his beautiful life with all of you. I have such fond memories as a little girl coming over with Bro hanging out in your barn, letting your horses eat my blonde hair, petting your wolf dogs, and seeing all of you. Your dad and mom were always so warm and welcoming that it made being there feel like a highlight. This morning I was thinking of your dad and, though I haven't talked to him in several years, I could picture his smile, see him standing proudly next to Fran, and I could hear his distinctive voice. That made me smile and ache at the same time. He, and all of you, are a blessing in my life and I will be with you in spirit from Minnesota.
Sending my love to all the McCartneys,
Christy Anderson Jacob

Bob was a bright shining light to an impressionable young man and set an example for one to follow to be happy successful in life. He talked me into selling my new 1964 British Racing Green Corvair Corsa, 4 carburator, 4 speeed on the floor for 1954 Ford beater that drank 2 quarts of oil a week, but I had no car payment. I did listen!
Bob was a wonderful man.
My sincerest sympathy to the McCartney Family.
