Robert WACKE Obituary

WACKE Robert H. Robert H. Wacke died unexpectedly on May 19, 2011, in his residence at Bowling Green, Ohio. Born to Arabella (Schleicher) Wacke and Otto Wacke in 1922, Bob was raised in Williston, Ohio, where small-town values and extraordinary people established his outlook on life as service to God and to others. He was a proud veteran officer of World War II and the Korean War. His working life was a 35 year career in executive positions with Owens-Illinois, Inc. where he truly enjoyed working with valued colleagues and friends, advancing the state of the company and serving Toledo as well as the other communities where OI operated facilities throughout the country. After the death of his wife Alice (Stanford) Wacke in 1977, he married Bertha (Anton) Wacke in 1978. When Bob retired in 1982, the couple moved from Toledo to Houston, Boca Raton and ultimately to San Antonio, Texas, where they spent the last 14 years. Bertha passed away in June of 2010. San Antonio held many wonderful, dedicated friends as well as Bob's and Bertha's spiritual home, The Lutheran Church of the Resurrection. Bob will be interred with his beloved Bertha at Fort Sam Houston in San Antonio. He is survived by daughter, Barbara Sams, her husband Jon, both of Phoenix, Arizona and son, Robert S. Wacke of Toledo. At his request, no visitation will be held for Bob. Friends are asked to contribute any memorial in his name to the Luther Home of Mercy, Williston, Ohio, or to a charity of the donor's choice. In death, as in life, Bob knows that his Redeemer lives and that He shall stand at the latter day upon the Earth. ....41 years ago almost to the day, Bob took me to lunch at Dyer's Chop House in downtown Toledo...he was really a charming guy to have a meal with; witty and gracious with a fine sense of humor...at meal's end, he offered me a job which I accepted...as the years went by I always looked forward to talking with him at the annual meeting and at trade shows...he treated rookies and veterans alike with kindness and respect....prayers go out to him and his family.

It was a pleasure working with Bob. He was a great inspiration to all of us in Libbey sales. He and his staff helped Libbey Glass become a dominate world leader in table glassware. Bob was a a true gentleman and a good friend. John Purcell
