Roy Hodge Obituary

Roy Eugene Hodge, Sr., 69, formerly of Toledo, passed away October 21, 2005, in his home in Dallas, Texas. Roy was born to the union of Johnny Hodge and Jettie Mae Hall, November 8, 1935.
Roy attended Boys High School in New York City where he was an accomplished student/athlete excelling in football, boxing, baseball and track. He then went on to attend Toledo University where he was an outstanding football player and after graduation he had a short stint in professional football prior to his military service. Roy proudly served in the United States Army.
Roy's professional life in education was embellished with numerous accomplishments, awards and recognition for his endless efforts to help others. He was an acclaimed administrator in the Toledo School System for more than 25 years where he impacted thousands of lives. Roy was far more than an educator he was a child advocate and a champion of countless children who would have otherwise been forgotten by the educational system. Roy was a surrogate parent for many of his students and a spokesman for the community.
After coming to Dallas in September, 1991, Roy couldn't stay away from helping others. He began substitute teaching for a short period of time followed by a position as a community liaison at Martin Luther King, Jr. Learning Center. He performed his duty with the same diligence and expertise as in the 36 prior years. Roy lived his life in service of others always believing that the opportunity to receive a proper education was the God given right of every child. We will mourn Roy greatly, but we must console ourselves by knowing he is happy and healthy in the everlasting with our God Almighty.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Mary Hodge; older brother (Larry Hancock), and youngest son (Reginald Hodge).
He leaves behind a wife, Ernestine Wingfield-Hodge and step-children; a brother, Robert Gourman and daughter; a son, Roy Hodge, Jr. (Holly); grandchildren, Lena and JR; a daughter, Robbi Hodge; grandchildren, Mikesha and Michale, and countless cousins and friends. Roy, we will see you soon.
Services are 11:00 a.m. Saturday, preceded by wake services at 10:00 a.m. at Friendship Baptist Church, 5301 Nebraska. Services entrusted to the House of Day Funeral Service. www.house ofday.com

Roy and Robbie, I am so sorry to hear about the loss of your father. I sure enjoyed him and the stories he and Daddy told over the years. Had I known sooner, I would have been at the service but I just found out today. If there's anything I can do, do not hesitate to call on me.

Sincerely,

Terri

Hi Roy Jr. & Holly,

May God comfort you during this time of sorrow. We know what it means to be without our parents, but God allowed them to be around long enough to see us grow up and have our families. I know you will miss your dad, but he is truly in a better place now. Let us know if you need ...anything... Love You!!
