Shirley Ann Parcell
9/16/1928 - 8/9/2023
Shirley Ann Parcell (nee Ruhl) of Toledo, OH passed away on August 9, 2023, at the age of 94. She has gone home to the Lord and is reunited with her husband of 69 years, Mac, who passed away in 2018.
Shirley was born September 16, 1928, and grew up in Toledo, OH. She was a graduate of DeVilbiss High School and attended Norwood West End Church of Christ where she met Mac. They married on June 11, 1949, at what would become their faith home, Hampton Park Christian Church.
A steadfast member of Hampton Park for 60 years, Shirley was a pillar of many groups and organizations in the church. She and Mac taught Sunday School together for 50 years and hosted guests to the church through the Interfaith Hospitality Network. Shirley led a group of women collecting stamps to benefit the Heifer Project and was active with the Quilters group.
One church organization she was most passionate about was the 'Swaddlers' which collected clothes and supplies for local children in need. She had a passion for the care of children, having watched children from her home on Rushland Avenue for over 20 years.
In her downtime Shirley was a passionate gardener and loved to cross stitch, making many beautiful pieces that remain cherished by her family.
Shirley was preceded in death by her parents, Dunham and Esther Ruhl; her sister, Marilyn Beckstedt; brother, Gary Ruhl; son-in-law, Robert Derlakta; nephew, Greg Ruhl; and her husband of 69 years, Harold "Mac" Parcell.
Her memory will be cherished by their four children, Judy Derlatka, Bruce (Carol) Parcell, Brion Parcell, and Brady Parcell. She also leaves loving memories with nine grandchildren, Jason (Caroline) Derlatka, Rachel (Mark) DeJarnatt, Daniel (Amber) Derlatka, Jason (Rachel) Bonaminio, Christina Parcell (Mathew Deiger), Robert (Brandi) Parcell, Justin (Megan) Parcell, Caitlin (Peter) Moon, and Shannon Parcell (Gerrit VanCoevering). She is also survived by an amazing 19 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren! Also holding a special place in Shirley and Mac's lives is the Dao family who "adopted" them as grandparents after immigrating from Vietnam to the United States in the early 1990's.
Graveside service will be held at Toledo Memorial Park Chapel of Peace (6382 Monroe St., Sylvania) September 16 at 10:00 a.m. followed by Celebration of Life memorial service at Aldersgate United Methodist Church (4030 Douglas Rd., Toledo) at 12:00 noon.
Donations in Shirley's memory can be made to the Swaddlers Ministry, Hampton Park Christian Church or to Heifer International.
