Sonja Irwin Obituary
Sonja Marion Irwin, age 87 of Toledo, Ohio died Saturday, September 30, 2017 at the Lakes of Monclova. She was born in Doylestown, PA on August 10, 1930 to Siegfried and Gertrude (Wenzel) Putz. On June 14, 1953 she married Robert Lee Irwin. A 1948 graduate of Divilbiss High School, Sonja attended the University of Toledo where she received her Bachelor's Degree in Education in 1952. Sonja was employed by the Toledo Board of Education as an Elementary School Teacher for 33 years. She taught Kindergarten at Gunkle Elementary for two years and Second Grade at Burrough's Elementary for 31 years. Sonja and her husband, Robert wintered for 25 years in Winter Garden, Florida where they were active at the People of Faith Lutheran Church. She was a member of Kappa Delta Sorority and enjoyed painting arts and crafts, but most importantly, her grandchildren and great grandchildren were her absolute "pride and joy".
She is survived by her loving husband of 64 years, Robert Lee Irwin; children, Daniel (Denise) Irwin, Linda (Tree) Wineland and Jon Kevin (Peggy) Irwin; six grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.
There will be no visitation however, graveside services will be held at 11:00 AM on Thursday, October 5, 2017 at Ottawa Hills Memorial Park at Talmadge and Central Ave. Contributions may be made in Sonja's memory to either Hospice of Northwest Ohio, 30000 E. River Road, Perrysburg, OH 43551 or to People of Faith Lutheran Church, 228 Windemere Road, Winter Garden, FL 34787. Arrangements by Neville Shank Funeral Home, Holland, Ohio (419-865-8879). I have known Sonja ever since I joined Kappa Delta Sorority at the University of Toledo back in the late 1950's. She was an alum while I was a student. She and I both taught at Burroughs Elementary when I joined the faculty after returning to teaching (I had taken 10 years off while having my children.) I left after two years when my family moved to Florida. But I often came home to Toledo in the summer and the Kappa Deltas would get together for lunch. I could always count on Sonja being there. She will be greatly missed by her Kappa Delta sisters and friends as she was the kind of person who would do anything she could do to help you out. Rest in peace, my dear friend and Kappa Delta sister.
My condolences to all of her family. (Her husband had done a lot of cabinet work in two of our homes while we lived in Toledo.)
