Thomas Meiring Obituary

Thomas Edward Meiring

September 23, 1938 -

April 15, 2022

"Last night it did not seem as if today it would be raining."- Edward Gorey

Tom passed away at home in the early morning on Good Friday at age 83. Though he had been battling Leukemia for the past three years, his death still seemed to have come too suddenly. He is sorely missed.

He was born to Clarence and Otillia (Yeager) Meiring, and was preceded in death by his siblings, Connie Meiring, Rita Fortner McMenamin and Jim Meiring; nephew,Tim Fortner and his wife, Georgia; and nieces, Mary Meiring and Mary Jo Marlow and her husband, Randy. He is survived by his partner, Rick Rothman; many cousins; nieces, Nancy (Jud) Lanzer, Marcia (Peter) Meiring-Tuite, Anne (Ray) Meiring-Brady, and Jean (Peter) Anderson; nephews, Jim Meiring, Tom (Cindy) Meiring, Joe (Mary Sue) Fortner, Greg (Jodie) Fortner, Bob (Marsha) Fortner and Rich Fortner.

Tom could connect with people in a very personal and genuine way which is what, I think, made him such a fine therapist, friend and life partner. He liked classical and jazz music, and was always up for a game of cards or dominoes with family and friends, even days before his death. Fall and Winter were his favorite seasons, and he loved nothing more than a snowy day with a blazing wood fire. He was fond of all things English, especially Queen Elizabeth II, whom he referred to as "a bastion of sanity in a world gone mad."

I know I can speak for Tom in expressing heartfelt thanks to Dr. Bhumika Patel of the Cleveland Clinic who oversaw his treatment. He could not have been in better, more caring hands. We are also very grateful to the doctors and staff of the Dana Cancer Center, the wonderful nurses at the UTMC infusion center where Tom received many a transfusion, and all of the folks at Hospice of Northwest Ohio, who so graciously helped fulfill Tom's final wish of dying peacefully and comfortably at home. Finally, we would like to express our gratitude to our families, the Meiring and Rothman clans, and to our friends for their ongoing love and support.

Tom was cremated as he had requested, and there will be a memorial service in the near future. If contemplating a memorial contribution, please consider WGTE Public Media or the Toledo Symphony, which Tom always treasured, or Hospice of Northwest Ohio.

Working with Dr.Meiring, 40 years ago, helped me to learn how to minister to others and also motivated me to become a psychologist. He not only modeled how to serve but moreover strove to enable people to become whole persons who could function in more fulfilling ways of living. There are/were few like him.

I first met Tom back in the mid-70's when I was working for the Allen County Youth Services Bureau and he was one of our Board members. Our paths crossed several times over the years, and I even made some referrals of clients to his psychotherapy practice. He was truly a gentleman, and he was committed to helping others throughout his life.

Rick, you are in my thoughts and prayers. I fondly remember those days at St. Mary's and how you and Tom were such a vital part of the parish. He was supportive of Peter Brucker and others during that difficult time in the early 1990's He walked with me through some challenging times.

Rick and family, so sorry to hear of Tom´s passing. We last saw him when he attended our Mom Jeanette Nusbaum´s memorial as she was his cousin. I loved Tom´s impish sense of humor and so enjoyed laughing with him. Happy he is no longer suffering.

My heart is broken to hear about the loss of Dr. Meiring. I will cherish the years I worked with him and the years we kept in touch. He was a man of wisdom and had the biggest heart. He will be missed dearly. Rick is in my thoughts and prayers.
