Thomas Vines Obituary

VINES Thomas Dale Thomas Dale Vines, 66, passed away August 18, 2008, at St. Vincent Mercy Medical Center. He was born to Clifton S. Vines and Elizabeth L. Washington Vines, the second of ten children on January 24, 1942. True to his industrious nature, as a boy Thomas was employed at numerous jobs, beginning as a Blade paper boy and later running his own lawn care business. After graduating from Libbey High School, Thomas worked for Jeep and Toledo Edison. He joined the Armed Forces where he served honorably in the U.S. Army. After his discharge he returned to his hometown where he would receive a B.S. in social work from the University of Toledo in 1976. An avid gardener, Thomas established the David Washington Botanical Garden in honor of his late brother, Marvin. Thomas displayed a passion and gift for photography, capturing and creating images and chronicling the history of African-American's in the Toledo area. Tommy's art was widely exhibited at places such as the Toledo Museum of Art, Kent and Mott branch libraries, the Collingwood Arts Center, and beyond. A motivating and encouraging mentor to many people, Thomas took a special interest in children, working for Big Brother's Big Sisters for a time and as a family service worker for EOPA Toledo Head Start at the time of his death. Thomas was preceded in death by his father, Clifton and brother, Marvin. He is survived by his wife, Katherine and sons, Thomas Jr., Elwood, and Garland; his mother, Elizabeth; sisters, Alice and Rebecca, and brothers, David (Jeanne), Clifford (Lauren), Gregory, Cornelius, Stephen (Cheryl) and Anthony; 35 nieces and nephews; 25 great nieces and nephews, and a lifetimes worth of heartfelt poetry and moving photographs. Visitation will be Sunday, 3-5:00 p.m. at Dale-Riggs Funeral Home. Funeral Service Monday, 10:00, at Grace Presbyterian Church, Rev. Dr. Langston C. Bannister, Officiant. Interment private.

To the Vines Family,
My sincerest condolences go out to you. The last time I was in Toledo I ran into Tommie at the Krogers on Monroe St. We had a very interesting and informative conversation as you can imagine, knowing Tommie. When I think about Toledo I think about Tommie and the Vines family. A piece of me is gone and Tommie is already missed. May God bless you during this time.

I met Mr. Vines when my children were in Head Start many years ago. He always had an infectious smile on his face. He was so passionate about the children and making sure they had books to read. I am sorry to hear of his passing. I know he was a wonderful person and will be greatly missed.

To The Thomas Vines Families: My sincerest condolences. I was blessed with meeting Mr. Vines via his family in Indianapolis (The Rileys). He was a man that captured the beauty of his family and their experiences together with a photograph. In doing so, he allowed them to hold their moments that were dressed in beauty and truth in their hands. This was the least of this man. I had the honor of meeting him on a handful of occasions. With each encounter his gentle warmth reached me. He was a man that honored the privilege of existing. Because of that, the style of his soul will never escape me.

To Katherine and the entire Vines Family:

I am so sorry to hear of Tommy passing away. You all have my heartfelt symphathy at this time of sorrow for us all.

I've had the pleasure of knowing Tommy since we were both 8 years old when my family moved three doors down from the Vines family in the Brand Whitlock Homes. We were the best of friends for the next 10 years with Tommy always letting me know that he was bigger, stronger, faster, and smarter than me. As long as I didn't outdo him in any of those areas, then we were buddy-buddy. As hard as I tried, I never beat him out in anything. (Almost though, as outstanding academic student in 6th grade at Gunkel School!)

Even in never outdoing Tommy, I found, as anyone who has known him has found, that I am a better person because of the way Tommie touched my life.

I'm going to miss you buddy. Rest in peace.

I am so saddened to hear about Tom. He was such a powerful, creative, and loving force in the community. My sincere sympathies go to the Vines family and friends as well as to the community for our great loss. Tom was the kind of person who once you’d met – you’d never forget. Our paths crossed many, many times over the years. My fondest memory was when he and his wife generously sponsored and sent several youngsters off to their very first camping trip through the Boys & Girls Clubs of Toledo; how generous of them – what a great experience for the children.
Tom always had a sparkle in his eye and a kind word to share. I was truly impressed and encouraged by his enthusiasm for life, his passion for children, and his willingness to share his talents. I am so glad to have known Tom - he touched my life. Please know that you are in my thoughts at this terribly difficult time. But know that he will live on through his art, in wonderful memories, and in the actions of the people whose lives he touched and influenced.

I didn't have the pleasure of knowing Mr. Vines long, but my encounter was just as meaningful. When I first met Mr. Vines at EOPA, he had such a warm and inviting spirit about him. He asked me where I was coming from and was I familiar with EOPA. He then tells me how long he has been at EOPA. After some conversation he says "well all I can say is hang in there kid and don't let them people get to you up here." Patted me on the back, smiled and kept moving. When I would see him every now and then he would ask "How you holding up?" I would be like "Ahhhhhh." He would turn around and shake his finger at me, smiled and kepted it moving. He will be truly missed.
