Timothy McCartney Obituary

McCARTNEY

Timothy Sean

Timothy Sean McCartney, 66, passed away peacefully Sunday, June 21, 2015, at home surrounded by family. Tim was born October 24, 1948, to Frank Hurd and Blanche Bowker McCartney. His early years were spent in the Catawba Island area, before moving to Toledo, where he graduated from St Francis de Sales High School. Tim received his bachelor's degree from Loyola University Chicago, during which time he spent a year studying in Rome, Italy. In 1971, Tim joined the United States Marine Corps as a flight officer on an A6 Intruder stationed in Cherry Point, NC. After his military service, Tim attended The University of Toledo where he received his degree in Pharmacy. He worked at Houck's and Walter's pharmacies in the Toledo area for 33 years.

Tim married Eliza Swint McCartney on July 3, 1971, and together they raised two sons, who were Tim's ultimate joy. He enjoyed all of their accomplishments, especially football, and was so proud of their career paths and their families.

Tim pursued many interests over the years: reading, researching, and following each of his passions, until he became an expert on the subject. Among his interests were World War I aviation, World War II submarines, Grand Prix racing (he attended many Formula I events while studying in Europe), Ducati motorcycles (collecting and amateur racing), and railroad modeling. Tim was particularly interested in the operations and modeling of the Westside Lumber Company, a narrow gauge railroad in California. He shared this passion with many wonderful friends over the years, and was inducted into the Narrow Gauge Hall of Fame in 2014.

Tim was preceded in death by his parents and his brother, Michael. He is survived by his wife, Eliza; son, Dr. Michael (Melissa) and grandson, Mason; son, Brian (Sarah) and grandson, James; sister, Bridget (Karl) Rogier; nieces and nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews, and many cousins.

Tim requested that his body be donated to The University of Toledo College of Medicine and Life Sciences. There will be a memorial Mass in celebration of Tim's life at Gesu Church at 11 a.m. on July 11, followed by a reception of remembrance. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the St. Francis de Sales High School endowment fund.

Dear Eliza and Family,

I was one of Tim's roommates at Loyola's Rome Center. I regret letting so many many years pass without keeping in touch. He will always hold a special place in my life and heart, for the marvelous travel and learning experiences we shared and for the little everyday things shared day in and day out. He made everyone there who knew him more complete through his great energy, his ever-present fascinations and his winning desire and ability to share this goodness with others. May God bless and keep you all in his graces. "Ciao and Arrivederci" Tim.

Eliza and Family,
I have fond memories of Tim when he was at Port Clinton High School. He was interesting and interested in so many topics, even back in the 60's.
It is hard to understand why people are taken from us, but find comfort in knowing you were a special part of such a well-lived life. So sorry for your loss.
