Towne Abercrombie Obituary

Towne Robert Abercrombie

Towne Robert Abercrombie, 83, of Toledo, Ohio, passed away peacefully on July 3, 2025.

Born in Zanesville, Ohio, and raised in Cincinnati, Bob led a life marked by dedication, craftsmanship, and spirited enthusiasm for the things - and people - he loved most.

A proud veteran, Bob served in the United States Coast Guard from 1960 to 1964, stationed aboard the USS Tupelo on the Great Lakes and trained as an electrician - skills he later brought to bear in a long and respected career as Manager of Central Maintenance at Chrysler (Jeep), where he worked for over 20 years and where he retired from at the age of 58.

Bob was a passionate collector and restorer of classic cars, antique furniture and vintage jukeboxes, and a founding member of the "Oak Park Gang," a classic car club whose members were not only fellow enthusiasts, but lifelong friends. His garage was often as full of laughter as it was chrome.

He was also a member of Providence Lutheran Church in Holland, Ohio.

Bob was predeceased by his beloved wife of 49 years, Carole; as well as his parents, Gene (Helen) Abercrombie; brother, Doug Abercrombie; and granddaughter, Rebecca Towne Abercrombie. He is survived by his son, Gene (Jean) Abercrombie; grandchildren, Joshua and Sydney Abercrombie; brother, R. Thomas (Kristine) Abercrombie; numerous nieces and nephews; and his devoted partner, Arlene Wines, with whom he shared nearly 15 joyful years.

A graveside service will be held at Springfield Township Cemetery, on Monday, July 21, 2025, at 12:00 p.m.

In lieu of flowers, the family encourages memorial contributions to be made to Sunshine Communities (www.sunshine.org/donate/memorial-or-honorarium) or to a charity of the donor's choice.

Bob's life was one of character, care, and joy - and he will be remembered every time an engine turns over, a jukebox plays, or a friend tells a story that begins, "Remember when Bob…"

When "Hey Bob" hired in at Jeep, the plant was on strike for a week, and we worked together in maintenance inspecting oven seals in the 46 bldg paint shop. Bob was a great inspiration to me throughout the many years we worked together. We had a wonderful working relationship and I will always cherish his friendship! He will always be thought of as a very caring man.

I met Bob the first day I started at Jeep. We were both supervisors in the Paint Shop at that time. We were friends ever since. My condolences to the family.

No one could have asked for a better boss/manager than Bob. I worked in Central Maintenance at Jeep for many years. He was always fair, honest and pleasant. My condolences to his family.
