My art teacher. An experience I was extraordinarily blessed to have at a very young age. He made an exception for me, because he almost never taught teenagers. And thanks to him, I became a much better artist. Thank you Mom and Thank you Dad. Mr. Chapman, you will forever be in my heart. R.I.P.

Though Mr. Chapman passed away 4 years ago, we still think of him, as he was one of brother's art teacher. Kelvin Myers enjoyed doing artwork very much, but sadly he died in 1974, far too soon. We do have a painting of Jean, that her husband did of her in watercolors during an art show in Sylvania.

Growing up in Sylvania, Ohio, I was introduced to Walter Chapman's work by my mother, Beth Curl, who was a docent at the Toledo Museum of Art. She & my father, Joe Curl, purchased several of his watercolor paintings of rural Ohio, one of which I inherited. I have since become a watercolor painter and teacher here in Palo Alto, California where I now live. I was last back in Sylvania, Ohio during the summer of 2011 while attending my 40th Sylvania High School reunion, (Class of 1971). While in town, I took a chance and called Walter & his wife to see if I might have a chance to meet him. To my surprise & delight, he invited me & a local old friend over to his home.We spent the afternoon with Walter and Jean looking at many of Walter's paintings and sketchbooks dating back to WW II. They were incredibly gracious, and it was a treasured experience to have spent such time in their company and seeing such a collection of incredible artwork. Cheers to you Walter & Jean! I just know your are slinging the paint around the heavens sharpening the eyes & aesthetic appreciation of all those in your good company. ;-)

Taking portraiture classes with Mr. Chapman was one of my fondest memories. He helped me become the artist I am today. I will never forget his kindness, his talent and the world is a colder place now that he is gone.

I was blessed to have the opportunity to be one of his students, and with his skill and guidance as a teacher, he helped me attain my artistic zenith. I will never forget him and that precious gift he gave me. RIP Mr. Chapman.

I offer my sincere sympathy to the family of Walter Chapman. They will not grieve alone; a man of his stature will be missed by the entire community. Because he was among the most accomplished artists of his generation, his passing seems like the end of an era.

Walter will be dearly missed...his wit, humor and charm. His talent and wisdom. I learned so much from Walter, not just painting. But to live your life to the fullest, to find the beauty in the shadows dancing on a delapidated old barn. His drive and passion for art amazed and inspired me. I once asked Walter, "how do you keep that fire going Walter, the desire to paint every day?". I was asking because I was beginning to lose the drive and passion I once had. Walter made one simple statement. "Julie, your plate is too full". No hesitation in his response. Walter knew the answer immediately. Those wise words, among many other art and life lessons, I will never forget. Or trying to catch up to Walter in Rockport, Massachusetts as he sprinted up a Rocky path, to the spot our class would be painting that day. All the students, lugging their paint supplies up this path, could not catch up. I think I could almost see Walter grinning mischievously as he left us in the dust! I am blessed to have had the opportunity to have Walter as my mentor. I sincerely send my deepest, most heartfelt sympathies to dearest Jean, and entire family. With love and hugs, Julie McGilvery and Kevin Megyesi

We knew Walter since 1969 when we purchased 3 of his paintings in Toledo. He and Jean stayed with us in our Pleasanton CA home which resulted in Walter painting 2 scenes of Pleasanton and three of San Francisco for us. All are hanging in our home for us to remember his sweet soul and the love and kindness and fun he brought to our lives. He made a great chocolate fudge ice cream sauce!!

Mr. Chapman was a fabulous Artist and an exceptionally kind man. After the death of our 6 year old brother, Mr. Chapman chose my mother to sit for him to teach portrait painting to students in class which only met 1hr.,weekly for 10 weeks. I am convinced Mr. Chapman saved her life and when I asked her, she said he had. God Bless him. Our Sympathy to Jeannie and his Family. The Connolly and Hanover Families

Our Lord has taken home a wonderful and talented man, and have one of the prints of Christ that he drew at St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Maumee, years ago, in a place of honor in our living room. His sister Martha was a dear friend and through her I was able to meet and enjoy Walter's paintings.
May his family be blessed knowing that he has endeared himself to many hearts and art lovers.
