William "Bill" D. Birr

October 12, 1934 - December 19, 2021

William "Bill" Birr passed away on Sunday, December 19, 2021.

He was born in Toledo, Ohio on October 12, 1934 to William J. Birr and Elsie M. Kurth. He was preceded in death by siblings, Edward, Robert, Irving, Lona, Mary; and daughter; Kathryn. He graduated from Woodward High School in 1952 and joined the Army. While there, he was a Pvt-1 Mechanic Repairman working on Nike Missiles. Bill had a passion for sports. His first job was sweeping the baseball stands and running the scoreboard at Swayne Field. He then spent 40 years at Ohio Bell. Bill was an active member of the Old Newsboys Goodfellows Association, Telephone Pioneers and a former Commander for the American Legion Vernon McCune Post 132. Also, he was extensively involved at Christ Church and then Bethel Lutheran Church. When not watching sports, he enjoyed playing cards with friends and family.

Bill would like to be remembered for his kind generosity, and his love for God, country, and his family.

He is survived by his loving wife, Kathleen A. Birr; and sons, Paul (Nikki) Weisser, William L. (Pam) Birr; his daughters, Cheryl (Herman) McClure, Laura (Patrick) Brown; his grandchildren, Nichole (Chad) Parker, Michael Poulos, Jason (Stephanie) Brown, Bethany (Juan) Olvera, Charles (Ashley) Weisser, Mia (Maarten) DeWaal, Georgia (Robert) Debruyn; 13 great-grandchildren; special sister-in-law, Shirley Doherty (Joseph Baxter); special nephews, Rick Sobecki; and godson, Tom Marsh.

Bill's funeral will be held at Walter Funeral Home, 4653 Glendale Avenue, Toledo, Ohio 43614. Visitation is on Wednesday, December 29, 2021, from 2:00-8:00 p.m. The funeral Service will be on December 30th at 11:00 a.m.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Bethel Lutheran Church, Toledo, Ohio or the Ability Center of Greater Toledo.

My thoughts are with you and your family. I did not know Bill well. What I did know was through my mom and my brother Mike Healy. He sounds like he was a very kind, and generous man. I hope he is remembered that way.

Tom and I played cards with Kathy and Bill for years and graduated from. Woodward high school also. We laughed and cried together and had such good times through out the years. His sense of humor and generosity were his virtues. He will be greatly missed.
