William Mewborn Obituary

William Marshall Mewborn, Jr.

Dr. William "Doc" M. Mewborn Jr. DVM, age 77, passed away peacefully with family by his side on September 6, 2018. Doc lived in Sylvania Township for many years before moving to Reading, Michigan.

The son of Dr. William and Marcella (Rardin) Mewborn, Doc was born on August 22, 1941 in Toledo, Ohio. Doc became an Eagle Scout in 1957. He also spent many summers as a camp counselor. Doc graduated from DeVilbiss High School in 1959 and from The Ohio State University in 1966 with a degree of Doctor of Veterinary Medicine. He was a member of the Phi Delta Theta Fraternity and the Omega Tau Sigma Fraternity. Doc was a veterinarian for many years in the Toledo area. He was instrumental in the campaign that motivated voters to pass the levy to purchase, develop, and operate the former Stranahan Estate as Wildwood Preserve Metropark. Doc had a heart for protecting the wildlife that lived in this area. He was actively involved in the community, with a special fondness for the Humane Society.

In addition to his work as a volunteer, Doc enjoyed spending time with his grandsons, photography, birding, reading books, The Ohio State football, and playing the banjo in bands. Doc was preceded in death by his parents. He is survived by one sister, Melinda Mewborn Rupp and one brother, Jed (Cheryl) Mewborn. Doc is also survived by his sons, Todd (Kelli) Mewborn and Chris (Kim) Mewborn, and three grandsons, Christopher, Nicholas, and Jacob.

A celebration of life gathering will be held in Doc's memory from 1 p.m. – 5 p.m. on Sunday, September 16, 2018 at The Ward Pavilion at Wildwood Preserve Metropark, 4830 West Central Ave. Toledo, Ohio 43615 (east entrance). In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial contributions be made to Wildwood Metropark, Toledo, Ohio. Online condolences may be shared at toledocremation.com.

So surprised to see Doc's obituary. He is one of the good guys who should live forever! Fond memories of the days at DeVilbiss High School and the fabulous work that he did to establish Wildwood Metropark and garnering support from the community for parks in Northwest Ohio. He has left his mark and will always be a treasured memory!

So sad to hear of Doc's passing. I have this vivid memory of Doc sitting on a stool on the Devilbiss High School stage playing his banjo. Then at OSU where he was an older and wiser Buckeye than I. Then as our vet when he had his clinic on Central. Good memories of a good man.
