Leda Smith Obituary

Leda Kathryn Pond Smith

November 16, 1952 - October 9, 2025

Leda Kathryn Pond Smith passed away October 9, 2025. She was born November 16, 1952, to Ronald George Pond and LaPrele Smith in Idaho Falls, Idaho. There was hardly a dull moment around the Pond house. As the oldest daughter of 14 children, she learned how to take care of a family at a young age and was a second mother to most of her siblings. Her parents taught her so many valuable skills in her life; gardening, sewing, and cooking for the masses.

She attended Ricks College after high school where she met her husband David Allen Smith. They were married in the Idaho Falls Idaho temple on August 2, 1972, and spent 53 wonderful years serving and loving each other.

She is the mother of eight children. Ryan (Kim), Rachelle (Cory) Ballard, Melissa (Victor) Steinfeldt, Brandt (Arlene), Brigham, Brice, Vance (Randi), and was looking forward to meeting her daughter who was still born.

Her greatest passion in life is the gospel of Jesus Christ, and so loves Our Savior, Jesus Christ. She taught everyone every day through her example and loving advice. As a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, she held many callings and was very willing to serve in any capacity asked.

Mom utilized her entrepreneurial talents to provide extra care for her 7 kids. One of them was being an expert seamstress and would sew all our clothes. She also taught sewing lessons to others, years later some of those students would come and tell her how much fun they had and how good it was to have that little bit of knowledge. One day she was asked if she could fix a cushion on a couch and she gave it a try. She found she was successful and Cover Up was born. After several years of upholstery work, she found an opportunity to make soccer jerseys for the city. She would cut, sew, and put numbers on them in our basement. On December 5, 1995, she opened Cover Up, with her son Ryan, as a store front with only a card table and a folding chair. Thirty years later, with locations in Tremonton and Brigham City, the business is still going strong.

She was preceded in death by her parents Ron and LaPrele Pond, her oldest brother Ron, and her stillborn daughter.

She is survived by her husband David, her 7 children, and 23 grandchildren with a great grandchild on the way.

Leda was a big part of my childhood memories, as her daughter was a dear friend of mine. There wasn't a time that I was at their house that she wasn't making sweaters or cardigans, or refinishing a truck seat or a couch. She was a very hard worker, and very talented at what she chose to do. She had a zest for life, and a smile that could light up a room. I am so grateful for her being willing to share her talents with the community.
