Wilkus Family,
I was one of Eric's best friends, and I was with him less than 20 mintues before this tragedy took place. I only wish there was something I could have done to trade places with him. Now I'm out of the Army, but he's still holding strong in my heart. Eric is someone I still think about every single day, and my heart hurts knowing he's not with us anymore. Please know that you're all in my prayers.

Holding you all in my thoughts and prayers.
The Wind on The Downs
“I like to think of you as brown and tall,
As strong and living as you used to be,
In khaki tunic, Sam Brown belt and all,
And standing there and laughing down at me.
Because they tell me, dear, that you are dead,
Because I can no longer see your face,
You have not died, it is not true, instead
You seek adventure in some other place.
That you are round about me, I believe;
I hear you laughing as you used to do,
Yet loving all the things I think of you;
And knowing you are happy, should I grieve?
You follow and are watchful where I go.”
(Written by Marian Allen during World War l )
Two lines that I wish you to keep near your heart…….
“You seek adventure in some other place.
That you are round about me, I believe”
I did not know Eric, but I am remembering
his service and sacrifice. He is my hero. !

The Other Side
i'm over on the other side
where life and death softly divide.
left my skin and bones behind
now i'm over on the other side.
can you feel me there with you?
my breath is gone but i'm not through.
loved you then and i still do
from over on the other side.
i can fly. really fly.
below the earth ... all through the sky.
tell em all i did not die.
i'm just over on the other side.
it's good here on the other side.
the sweetest songs...the bluest skies.
thank you for the tears you cried
but it's good here on the other side.
i can fly. really fly. below the earth...all through the sky.
tell em all i did not die.
i'm just over on the other side
the world is smaller than a needle's eye.
where life and death softly divide.
when you leave your skin and bones behind
i'll be waiting on the other side.
i can fly. really fly. below the earth ... all through the sky.
go tell em all i did not die.
i'm just over on the other side.

As the memorial day weekend rolled by my deepest thoughts were with eric. as a good friend and school mate throughout middle and high school there is not a day i do not think about eric and the grand sacrifice he made for his country. i always knew eric as the guy that was there when u needed him and was always there to listen to what ever you needed to tell him. eric was a good friend from the day i met him in the sixth grade till this day. I want you to know that our thoughts and prayers are always with you and your family.

There is nothing that I can say or do to take away the pain or bring you peace in your time of sorrow, but I will offer you and your family my heart felt condolences. I also offer you my prayers that in time the pain will easy and the memories of your HERO will carry you through each day and night. I want to thank your HERO, for his/her selfless act of becoming a member of the armed forces, his/her willingness to defend the United States of America, all that we hold sacred and for the sacrifice that will forever be etched in the memories of all those who knew him/her. Though tears can never bring him/her back, we hope that our tears express our gratitude for the sacrifice that he/she made and our sorrow at his/her passing. I believe for every fallen HERO there is a star shining brightly up above to remind us of the precious gift we were given.
Your mission on earth is complete and you are now a member of GOD’s Heavenly armed forces. Stand down brave warrior and take your rightful place in Heaven with all the HEROES who have passed before.
I made a special promise to LE RON A. WILSON, a dear family friend who joined the Army with three other friends, one of whom is my son (Le Ron was killed in action on 07/06/07 at the age of 18) on the day he was laid to rest as I touched his coffin, that I would never forget him nor would I forget those that gave their lives for our country before him, with him and after him and so when I came across www.legacy.com, I thought what a great way to keep my promise to Le Ron, so I will continue to leave tributes in each guest book until the day there is no longer the need to leave these tributes to a FALLEN HERO.
REST IN PEACE, HERO, YOU WILL NEVER BE FORGOTTEN!!

Eric and your family have given to all of us a selfless sacrifice. It takes uncommon courage to serve our country in this volatile time. Putting aside individual convictions as to weather this is a right or wrong war, one must support and give honor to those who follow the orders and given their life in doing so. Dear Eric & Wilkus Family,
I had went to West with Eric and had dated him when I was a freshman and just recently before he passed. I only wish that I had more time with him but, he is in a better place now. When I first found out that Eric had passed, I was devasted. How can such a great person so full of life and energy be gone? Then, a soothing feeling came over me. A feeling of happiness because I know that Eric is in good hands and is now a guarding angel to all that loved him. Eric truly was a great person and will truly be missed. Your family as well as Eric are in my prayers at this difficult time. If you or your family need anything please let me know. Once again I am truly sorry for your lost and you will remain in my prayers now and always.

Dear Dad and Mom Wilkus,
It seems that there are no words to express the pain and hurt that is being felt right now. Eric was such a close friend. I was one of the first ones to greet him in Korea, we were in he same platoon there and then came to the 57th together again in the same platoon. We spent so much time together, training, running together, and just out having fun too. A highpoint that me and Eric always talked about was when we were training to come to Iraq and we were beside each other on the machine gun range- making the guns "talk" back and forth. We were both very proud of that night and talked about it often, he even psoted the video on his myspace! It was with deepest sympathy but yet a great honor to read Psal 23 at Eric's memorial Service here in Iraq. Eric would always come and talk with me whenever he was missing home, had a problem, or just wanted someone to talk to. He was my younger brother... I don't know why he didn't talk to me and I wish that he would havestopped in to say "hi" that evening like he did many times. My heart pours out to you. Eric always talked so much about both of you. Mr. Wilkus- you were Eric's hero, not a time went by tha we talked that he didn't say something about you. I will be in further contact. Eric Will Not Be Forgotten.

I’ve know Eric for about 12 years. We always seemed to end up in the same CCD classes at St. Raphael’s. We then attended Grice Middle School together and I will never forget our 8th grade dance where Eric asked me to dance. He was a dear friend and classmate, we enjoyed 4 years of marching band together and I will never forget him. It wasn’t until this last summer I had learned he was stationed over seas; he was in my prayers then and always will be until we meet again. My deepest sympathies to all of Eric’s family and friends may you keep your faith and find comfort once again in your lives.

On my way to work today I passed the Kingston Kemp Funeral Home and could not help shedding tears for this young soldier. As horrible as funerals are there was nothing more heartwarming than to see so many firemen, veterans, police and other soldiers standing outside holding american flags and honoring this hero who fought for our country. I am so sorry for your loss and will keep your family and Eric Ryan Wilkus in my prayers. GOD BLESS!

Dear Wilkus Family,
I have known Eric since our first day of sixth grade at Grice. That year we had all of our classes together, and we became good friends. I never talked to him as much after that first year, but I always considered him a friend, even after we graduated. I was devastated to hear of his passing. He truly was one of a kind, always cracking a joke or laughing. That's how I will remember him.
I'm sorry for your loss. Your family will be in my prayers.

Words cannot express the sorrow we feel in our hearts now & when we heard that our good neighbors' had lost their wonderful son Eric. I'll always remember how my daughter, Tara (a substitute teacher, at the time) told us of a nice young boy who would be willing to clean the snow off our driveway & side walks. Well, that was years ago, but we recall those days like it was yesterday. We also recall the days of the "quad with snow plow attached" and how he always did much more than was necessary, always well mannered and never impolite. Recall the day he told us he was enlisting into the Army (how happy he was). We thank God for knowing such a wonderful young man. Please, if you ever need anything, we are right around the corner. Our thoughts & prayers go out to you and your family.

It has been many years since I last saw Eric but I remember his "little boy" face as if it were yesterday. I was Eric's teacher in kindergarten. I will always remember Eric as the little boy tinkling with the home-made go cart, with Marvin, did it ever get finished? during their Cub Scout years. His smile will never leave my memory when he got the "ear-ring"! its something to see, Eric in the military, when Marvin was the one to go on into the Sea Cadets(Navy), I have lots of memories of Eric I've watched him in his younger years at St. Raphaels, and caught some of his musicial notes on the field, I feel Eric through his 20 years accomplished more than some in their elder years, God will be with him and his family, we salute you Pt Eric Ryan Wlkus, heartfelt THANK YOU for your services to the U-S-A-!

My name is August Marchetti and I had served briefly with Eric Wilkus. Him and I shipped from Fort Dix in New Jersey to Fort Leonard Wood in Missouri a couple years ago nearly. Much of what is in your article is exactly the type of things Eric spoke about on the bus to the Philadelphia International Airport in February 2005. Eric was a good man, a young man who had gone on to serve his country and has now made the ultimate sacrifice. His name and others; should honestly be remembered by every American in this country.
Warmest Regards,
August Marchetti,
Former Pvt.

To the Family of Pfc. Eric R. Wilkus:
I will stand in grief with this soldier's family to honor him. For every fallen HERO there is a bright star that shines in the evening sky to remind us of the cherished gift we were given – even if for too short a time.
My heart breaks again as I sign yet another guest book of another courageous young soldier who gave their life so selflessly. I wish I never found myself in a position to have to sign another guestbook for the rest of my life, but I promised Brent that neither he nor any like him would be forgotten and so I will continue until the day there is no longer the need.
We lost our son SFC Brent A. Adams on 12/1/05 and it seems like yesterday. I wish so badly there were things I could say to you right now to make the pain you are feeling go away, but I know first hand there simply are no words that will bring you the comfort and peace your heart aches for. Just know that you are not alone. My heart, thoughts, and prayers are with you all as you go through this tragedy moment by moment and as you mourn this loss.
We don't know each other, will probably never meet, but will forever be united in the loss of our Heroes. We have, unfortunately joined a group none of us wanted to join, an ever-growing group of families in this situation. May God grant you peace and strength to get through this and be able once again to smile at a memory rather than have only the tears that flow so easily now. To be so proud of your loved one and so saddened at the same time is a mix of emotions very difficult to deal with as our hearts both burst with pride and pain together.
I am sorry that I never knew your soldier personally. While they can never be replaced, neither will they ever be forgotten. You must trust that sometime, someday the loving memories you have will help to sustain you and help you go on. This courageous soldier will forever be your Angel watching over you all for the rest of your lives. It's what brings me some measure of peace and comfort and I hope it will you as well.
To his family and friends in pain, I offer this comfort: When you find yourself in that dark sorrowful place, think not only of how you will miss him, but instead recall the years, days, hours and minutes gifted to you by his presence. The one thing that cannot be taken from you is your wonderful memories that now will mean more than ever.
If you ever want to talk, I'm only an e:mail away and would love for you to tell me more about your Hero.
God Bless this soldier and family who gave all and God Bless legacy.com for setting up this site where families can so quickly share their condolences and prayers with others like themselves.

Thank you
Dedicated to soldiers and their loved ones
Those who have laid in fox holes, carried guns, marched for hours,
For those who have had cold sleepless nights, endless days of discomfort,
For those who have endured the agony of war for my sake.
Thank you.
For those who have gently kissed a loved one goodbye,
and with a tear looked back for a last time,
For those who have found courage to carry the sword of liberty,
For those who have flown with the eagle,
For those who have landed on foreign soil,
to take freedom to other countries while keeping
freedom in ours,
Thank you.
For those who have lost limbs, lifes and loved ones,
For those who have lost friends, sisters ,brothers, mothers and fathers,
For those who have sacrificed and gave their all for freedom's sake.
Thank you.
For those who have found the courage to stand,
For those who have reached out a hand for their fallen comrade.
For those who give freedom to strangers ,and a hope for peace.
For those who sacrifice all they love, and pay the price for freedom.
Thank you."

The price Eric and his family have paid, Will Never Be Forgotten.
May he Rest Safely, in God's Care and may God's Loving Peace and Comfort be with the Wilkus family.
I am the Sister of such a young hero, who made the Ultimate Sacrifice in Vietnam, many years ago
Surely He hath borne our grief, and carried our sorrow.
