Gene "Jeep" Dehnert
September 6, 1927 - October 12, 2024
Gene Dehnert, 97, died peacefully in his sleep on October 12, 2024. He was born to "Gus" and Amy Dehnert in Lewistown and grew up in Hardin, Montana. He graduated with a Bachelor's degree in engineering from Montana State College. During his first quarter of college, he enlisted in the US Army where he played in the US Army Band as a drummer. When he returned to Montana State after his service, he met his beautiful Charlotte. Gene and Charlotte were married in 1950 and had 73 years together until Char's death in 2023.
After Gene graduated from Montana State in 1951, Gene's military recall led to their move to California where their first child, Jim, was born. Further military assignments resulted in Char and Jim joining Gene in Tokyo, Japan. After they returned from their life-influencing Japan residence, they lived, worked, and expanded their family with three more children in Billings, MT. They moved to Lander, WY in 1960 where their last child was born.
Gene was licensed as an architect in Billings. He went into partnership with Bob Corbett when he moved to Lander. His career as an architect spanned five decades, leaving a legacy of many beautifully designed structures, mostly schools, throughout Wyoming including the Fine Arts building, student union, and dormitories at the University of Wyoming.
Gene loved doing art he was an accomplished watercolor and pencil drawing artist. He also enjoyed fishing and traveling. He and Char had many foreign and domestic travel adventures together.
Gene was predeceased by his wife, Char, his sister, and a grandson. Gene is survived by his and Char's five children: Jim (Pat), Lon (Jantz), Bruce (Kulvinder), Gail (Norm) and Kelly (Connie), thirteen grandchildren, and eighteen great-grandchildren.
A Celebration of Life will be held Tuesday, October 22nd at Trinity Episcopal Church, 860 S. Third, Lander, WY at 11:00 a.m. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be sent to the Trinity Memorial Foundation at 860 S 3rd St, Lander, WY 82520, or Anam Cara Caregiving, LLC at 909 Fremont St, Lander, WY 82520.
