William Shields

1946 - 2025

William Scott Shields, known to family and friends as Scott, passed away on June 25, 2025 in Casper, Wyoming at the age of 78.

Born on July 29, 1946 in Albuquerque, New Mexico, Scott was the son of Eugene William Shields and Mary Alice Rundell Shields. He grew up with his younger siblings, Vince and Valli, who remember him as both a brother and a friend. Scott's life was marked by service, study, and friendship a life lived well.

Scott proudly served his country in the United States Navy from 1967 to 1974, stationed in Guam, Japan, and San Diego, California. Following his service, he pursued further education, earning an Associate of Arts degree from Chapman College in Orange, California in 1974 and later a Bachelor of Science in Geology from the University of Oklahoma in 1977. His professional life reflected his deep love of the earth and its history. He was an active member in the Wyoming Geological Association.

Residing in Casper for many years, Scott built lasting friendships and was known for his kindness, generosity, and quiet strength. He loved spending time outdoors, especially fishing with Gary, Dave, and others enjoying the rivers and lakes in Wyoming.

Scott is survived by his brother Vincent M. Shields, his sister Valli G. Gauthreaux, his three nieces, Meredith Fransen Shields, Haley Shields Gillory and Kelly Jean Billiot, and his longtime partner, Peggy Ann Zettlemoyer. He is remembered fondly by extended family, many friends, and colleagues who valued his friendship and warmth.

A Celebration of Life will be held on Friday, September 5, 2025 from 4:30 to 6:00 p.m. at the Tate Geological Museum in Casper, Wyoming. In honor of Scott's passion for geology, memorial contributions may be made to the Tate Geological Museum.
