Gino Marnoni
January 5, 2019
My name is Eugene (Gino) Marnoni. I was 8 years younger than Eugene and I lived directly across the street from the Stawicki family on the cornor of Chestnut and Charles Streets. Eugene has been on my mind a lot, and was searching to see if I could find where he lived now, hoping to visit on my next trip to PA. I knew the Stawickis well, The parents treated me like royalty and Walt was like an uncle. My one memory of him was when he lifted me on to a chair to tell me he was going into the military. I didn't know Sylvia that well, but did meet up with her briefly in California (if I remember correctly). But Eugene was the one, he was my big brother. He taught me how to catch a football. I remember well how scared I was when he threw me long balls, but I hide my fear because I was more frightened of disappointing him than I was of catching the ball. We played tackle in my back yard often, and I remember one game when he told me to tackle low, and I did it head-first and got knocked out (but I didn't care - I was proud I did what Eugene taught me. We played basketball on the street by their garage, and when he returned from the air force and bought a new Chevrolet I helped him wax it there one afternoon. When we were finished he took me to a small airfield not far from Jeannette where he hired a small plane for my first plane ride. The last time I saw him was at the funeral home in Jeannette whe he paid his respects to my father in 1994. I had moved on not long out of high school and college - to California and now to Spokane, WA. and unfortunately I'm late trying to fulfill my desire to sit and chat with him. I'm so sorry to hear of his passing, and though I'm late with condolences they come from a place in my heart I have held dear all these years.
