Marla J. Kalning

1935 - 2025

Marla Jean Kalning, 90, of North Huntingdon, passed away peacefully on Thursday, Sept. 4, 2025. Marla was born on Jan. 4, 1935, a daughter of the late Howard Hornfeck and Ada Carlson Hornfeck. She was a member of Sampson's Mills Church in White Oak. Marla was a graduate of McKeesport High School and also McKeesport Nursing School. During her career, she practiced as a company nurse and a registered nurse at McKeesport Hospital. Marla enjoyed many artistic hobbies, including watercolor painting, drawing, ceramic crafting, and photography. In her free time, she volunteered with the Norwin Art League and the Carnegie Museum on the Move. Marla also enjoyed U.S. and international travel and had a love of learning, taking online classes until recently, and her dogs brought her great joy. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Laimon Kalning, in 2003. Marla is survived by two sons, Greg Kalning (wife, Madalyn) and Doug Kalning (wife, Diane); two daughters, Lisa Howerton (husband, Scott) and Linda Kalning; and six grandchildren, Mitchell Kalning (wife, Cati), Matthew Kalning (wife, Courtney), Marshall Kalning (Madison), Jimmy Howerton (Sofia), Nicholas Kalning, and Jacob Kalning. Visitation will be held from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. on Wednesday, Sept. 10, 2025, at JAMES W. SHIRLEY FUNERAL HOME, 176 Clay Pike, North Huntingdon. If joining us to celebrate Marla's life, feel free to wear pastel colors in honor of her love of art and flowers. A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. on Thursday, Sept. 11, 2025, at Sampson's Mills Presbyterian Church in White Oak. Please go directly to the church.
