Lucas Petrill Obituary

It is with deep sadness and heavy hearts that we inform you of the death of our beloved father, Lucas Petrill, 52, of Hagerstown, MD, who passed from this life on Thursday, Jan. 16, 2025. Born on Sept. 2, 1972, in Jeannette, PA, he is the son of Gerald Joseph Petrill and Cynthia Denise (Free) Petrill of Penn, PA. Lucas was a 1990 graduate of Hempfield Area High School in Greensburg, PA, where he excelled at football, baseball, and basketball. He enrolled at Juniata College to continue his academic and athletic career by playing football. He played defensive back for Juniata, and in 1992 he led the team with four interceptions, which tied for third most interceptions in the conference. Lucas went on to serve in the United States Air Force and settled in MD, where he began his career as a corrections officer. Lucas worked in the Frederick County Sheriff's Office for over 26 years, where he established himself as a highly respected staff leader and, more importantly, a good friend to many colleagues. In his retirement, Lucas continued to work in various fields, curiously exploring different ways to continue to contribute to and build upon his life journey. He loved baseball caps, new sneakers, Italian food, Dad jokes and his relationship with God. A man of strong faith, he would give you the shirt off his back, putting family and friends' needs in front of his own. An avid sports fan, Lucas was always willing to engage in discussing sports ranging from football to UFC to women's softballthere was no limitation as he enjoyed the competitive aspect, which is at the core of sports. He was a die-hard Pittsburgh sports fan, enjoying attending games with his family and friends. He would often leverage his knowledge and experience with sports to better approach and understand all the challenges that life can bring. This mindset evolved into a philosophy that empowered him to listen, communicate, and empathize on a higher level. Above all, Lucas loved spending time with his family. He cherished his children and loved providing as much as he could for them. Whether he was coaching his kids at a sport or attempting to emulate a dance routine with one of his daughters, Lucas genuinely enjoyed spending time with his children and showed tremendous pride when speaking to friends about his kids. It did not matter whether plans involved going out to dinner, enjoying a movie, relaxing at home, attending dance recitals, watching softball games, or simply hanging out; he just wanted to spend time with his kids to get them to smile and laugh. His Christmas wish was for his loved ones to find peace, serenity, and spirituality. He is already sorely missed. Lucas was preceded in death by his younger brother, Justin Joseph Petrill. He is survived by his children, Shane Matthew Petrill, Zachary Joseph Petrill (Terra), Adeline Rose Petrill, Claire Denise Petrill, grandson Logan Abarca, grandson Joey Petrill, expecting granddaughter Lily Petrill, mother, Cynthia Denise Petrill, and father, Gerald Joseph Petrill, brother Lonnie Petrill (Dania), and nieces Noemi and Lucille Petrill. Friends will be received 9 to 10:30 a.m., Saturday, Feb. 22, 2025, in the The JOHN V. GRAZIANO FUNERAL HOME INC., 228 North Second St., Jeannette, PA. 154644. A Funeral Mass of Christian Burial will follow at 11 a.m., at the Sacred Heart Church in Jeannette, PA, as a service to celebrate Lucas's life journey. Sacred Heart Church is where he and his brothers attended primary school, played sports, and attended mass with family and friends throughout his childhood and when visiting his hometown. In lieu of flowers, we ask that contributions be made to a fund for Lucas's children. Very sorry to hear of Lucas’ passing. He was one heck of a baseball player and I had the pleasure of playing baseball with his brother Justin and got to know his youngest brother Lonnie. Lucas’ dad is also a great guy. The Petrill family are good people so I extend my deepest condolences to the Petrill Family.
