Velma Saire Obituary

Velma Saire, 89, of Sewickley, passed away in the early morning hours of Thursday, Aug. 18, 2022. A native of Glassport, she was born to Virginia (Altman) and Albert Backstrom. Despite a childhood filled with obstacles, she was valedictorian of Glassport Jr. /Sr. High School in 1951 and attended the University of Pittsburgh, where she received her B.S. in elementary education, M. Ed. in school administration, and Doctorate in administration. In her 50 plus years as an educator, she shaped thousands of lives as a teacher, administrator and college instructor in Pennsylvania, Ohio, Indiana, California, New Hampshire and Connecticut. While she referred to her experience as one of the developers of the Model School in McKeesport as the "Camelot of her career," she was also honored to have had both high schools she led designated as National Blue Ribbon Schools by the U.S. Department of Education. She received countless awards in educational leadership including the Distinguished Woman in Education from the University of Pittsburgh, a Congressional Award for a distinguished career in education in 2000 and membership in the prestigious 100-member Headmasters Association during her tenure at Darien High School. After announcing "retirement" in 2000 from her position as assistant superintendent of Quaker Valley Schools, she continued to teach as an adjunct professor at Carnegie Mellon University. Although not originally from Sewickley, she became an integral part of the community, serving on the public library board, as a member of the historical society and on the board at Linden Place. She was active in the Sewickley Presbyterian Church and worked tirelessly to welcome refugees to the community. Her legacy at Quaker Valley (and her love of giraffes) lives on in the Velma Award, "given to a QV professional, duo, or group who 'sticks their neck out' for the purpose of taking a risk, or a chance to do something that will enrich Quaker Valley Schools and the community." While lauded for her work as an educator, the most important aspect of her life was her family. She is survived by a sister, Shirley Cotton, of Mt. Pleasant, S.C.; her nieces, Denise Backstrom (Jim Fitzgerald), of Tupelo, Miss., Betsy Cotton (Rob Mulcahy), of Stockton, N.J., Lynne (Larry) Wagner, of Orrville, Ohio, and Melissa Cotton, of New York, N.Y.; her nephew, Dave Backstrom, of Statesville, N.C.; her grand-nieces, Allison Wagner, of Waverly, Ohio, Suzanne Wagner, of Smithville, Ohio, and Libby and Caris Wagner, of Orrville, Ohio; and her grand-nephew, Seamus Mulcahy of Portland, Maine. She loved spending time with the people she loved, cooking and baking for family and friends, sewing, knitting, summers at Chautauqua and she never missed an episode of Jeopardy. A celebration of her life will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 17, 2022, in the Sewickley Presbyterian Church, followed by a reception. All are welcome. Arrangements are by the RICHARD D. COLE FUNERAL HOME in Sewickley. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Sewickley Valley YMCA Velma Saire Youth Scholarship Fund, 625 Blackburn Road, Sewickley, PA 15143.

"What though the radiance which was once so bright
Be now for ever taken from my sight,
Though nothing can bring back the hour
Of splendour in the grass, of glory in the flower"
~ William Wordsworth

Velma Saire, we miss you, a little too much, a little too often, and a little bit more every day. You are now gone from us for a year and this shrine evolved as a spontaneous collaboration created by us. We know, you would be tickled pink as our Grandsons (4 and 6) unprompted, elected to add their Lego creations to her memory space-- she would be even more tickled when Connor interchangeably calls her, Dr. Saire or Dr. Seuss!

Ms. Velma was a beautiful light and wonderful friend at Linden Place. She was so warm and welcoming to our family when we moved there in 2018. By then she and my late MIL, Mildred Nash had become great Bible Study friends. I am in awe of her life and accomplishments. They are together again, praising the Lord, up front in Heaven. May she Rest In Peace.

We met Velma B Saire some 50 years ago in a Los Angeles Church where she was the Director of Christian education, with our leading bond being we grew up in Pittsburgh.

Nevertheless, we immediately enjoyed her sense of humor, and made fast, simply amazing friends, for fifty years, despite abundant moves between us in different directions all over the country, we became lifelong friends. So many moves, California, New Hampshire, Connecticut, and Pittsburgh, besides with us California, Oregon, and Washington, yet in some way we kept in touch. Velma came to visit us in Oregon, and we often made trips to Pittsburgh.

When Velma met our family, everything changed, as she became a part of our family, remembering birthdays, anniversaries, and important life events -- some of our most unforgettable memories are those centered around her table, with Velm taking pride in every little detail through guests enjoying her creative delicious food. Big or small, nothing was ever spared, down to cloth napkins and homemade dessert. What we always take away from these get-togethers is how much guests enjoyed themselves. She enjoyed Fondue and introduced our family to Fondue, which our daughter still prepares today.

Some of our most cherished memories with Velma are with times of raising our family. Her love of our kids quickly grew into her being an enormous part of our family life In Los Angeles, we spent a great amount of our time during summers at Cedar Lake Camp in Big Bear, where after that, our kids even now, talk of her crazy antics as a director with her "Backwards Day or PJ Day". As a child, our "KB" best described Velma Saire "just an overgrown kid", then, there´s the time when she tricked Bob into his "stint" as the Great Pumpkin for an autumn activity.

She loved movies, and delighted to take our two eldest, Rob & KB, to the Star Wars debut, via her inside connection through Mary VanKirk´s nephew, George Lucas - then, over the years, we fused our crazy wacky humor together with movies such as North Avenue Irregulars, Saint Vincent, plus back in the day, we religiously compared notes on our TV favorite episodes of Mary Hartman, Mary Hartman. Her humor is best described as unique, hilarious, and irreplaceable, we always found our laughing place with Velma.

Our home is brimming full of constant reminders of Velma Saire, from furnishings she assisted in selecting during our time in Los Angeles, to her needlework, knitting, a sign, the "lost tooth" Elf for Kam, Dokue dolls for our grandsons, Graduation dolls for Rory, Pandemic masks, Nativity scenes, Christmas stockings, and a treasure trove of letters we saved. A lifelong friendship is incredibly hard to find and even harder to live without, once you experience it. Her memory is beyond thoughtful -- as one of the kindest and most compassionate individuals, we ever met and will ever meet.

Velma Saire instantly made people feel significant in her endlessly selfless loving and beyond caring manner, plus one of the best friends, mentor, a family could ask for - the kind of person who will never be forgotten...

Anam Cara with love,
Bob & Georgie MacGinnitie
