Elizabeth Frey Obituary
Elizabeth Anne (Crawford) Frey, 91, of ManorCare Shadyside, formerly of Edgewood, went to be with the Lord Wednesday, March 4, 2015, following a long and courageous fight with dementia. She was the beloved wife of the late George D. Frey Jr.; loving mother of Dallas (Kathy) Frey III and Bruce C. Frey, both of Edgewood; and proud grandmother of Kelly Frey, of Shadyside, and Dallas Frey IV, of Chicago, Ill. She was preceded in death by her brother, James P. Crawford. Born Dec. 26, 1923, to the late Archibald M. and Annie E. (Conrad) Crawford, Betsy grew up in Ardmore and the East End of Pittsburgh. She attended Lower Merion High School before graduating from Peabody High School in 1941. Betsy graduated from Allegheny College, where she found a cherished circle of lifetime friends with a history major in 1945. She was a staff writer at the Pittsburgh Press when she met her future husband while cashing a check where he worked at Peoples' First Bank (now PNC) in 1947. Following her Sept. 10, 1949, wedding at St. Stephen's Episcopal Church, where her parents were married in 1921, she resigned to devote herself to family life. After moving numerous times in her youth, she was very pleased to have her sons complete kindergarten through high school at one single building of the Edgewood School District. Betsy devoted tremendous energy to raising her sons and supporting their school and athletic activities. She was a tireless advocate for her family. When her boys were older, she found time to volunteer with the Edgewood Cot Club, Carnegie Museum and other organizations. Betsy loved to travel and took delight in decorating her home with items from abroad and from the islands. She was passionate about beaches, especially at her beloved Ocean City, N.J. and Venice, Fla. Friends received from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Sunday at MCCABE BROS. INC. FUNERAL HOME, 6214 Walnut St., Shadyside. Funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Monday in St. Stephen's Episcopal Church, Wilkinsburg. Everyone please gather at the church. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations to St. Stephen's Episcopal Church, 600 Pitt St., Wilkinsburg, PA 15221. The family wishes to express thanks to the staff at Schenley Gardens, ManorCare Shadyside and Gateway Hospice for their compassion and kindness to Betsy while she was under their care.
