Herbert R. King Jr., 89, of Hampton Township, passed away Tuesday, July 9, 2013, while under the care of UPMC Presbyterian, Oakland. Born May 15, 1924, in Ingomar, he was a son of the late Herbert R. and Anna (Vandevort) King Sr. He was married May 11, 1951, to his wife, Marion (Robertson) King. Herb served in World War II as a medic in the Army. He then followed in his father's footsteps and attended the Pittsburgh Institute of Mortuary Science, graduating with the class of 1951 and serving his apprenticeship with his father at the Brandt Funeral Home in Perrysville. Herb was a funeral director for 62 years and owner of the Herbert R. King Jr. Funeral Home in Hampton Township for 54 years. He was a member of both the Allegheny and Butler funeral directors' associations. Herb also held various positions, including general manager at two local car dealerships in the '50s through the '70s. He also owned the King's Dairy Bar on Route 8 in Hampton for 50 years. He was involved in the community in many ways. He was one of the founders of the Northern Suburban Meals on Wheels and served as the treasurer of the Hampton Cemetery Association. He was a member of the founding campaign for UPMC Passavant; Masonic Lodge No. 715; Turtle Card Club; and the American Legion. In his early years, he played baseball and was an avid Pirates fan. He always enjoyed watching the Steelers. He is survived by his wife, Marion G. (Robertson) King, of Hampton Township; his three children, Marcia (Patrick) Dunphy, of McCandless Township, Dawn Roerink, of Marshall Township, and Scott (Anna) King, of Chagrin Falls, Ohio; five grandchildren, Brandon (Reiko) Dunphy, of McCandless Township, Kyle Roerink, of Casper, Wyo., Collin Roerink, of Marshall Township, and Carly and Andrew King, both of Chagrin Falls, Ohio; and sister, Lois Kessler, of West View. Herbert's family will welcome friends from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Thursday, July 11, 2013, and Friday, July 12, 2013, at the KING FUNERAL HOME AND CREMATION SERVICES, 2841 Woodland Circle, Allison Park, Pa. A funeral service will be held 10:30 a.m. Saturday, July 13, 2013, at Hampton Presbyterian Church, 2941 East Hardies Road, Gibsonia, with the Rev. Ted Martin, presiding. Please meet the family at the church. He will be laid to rest at Hampton Cemetery in Hampton Township.
