Samuel Markantone Obituary

Samuel Markantone, 86, of Murrysville, died Tuesday, June 7, 2016, the day before his 87th birthday. He was preceded in death by his parents, Louis and Maria Markantone; and his grandson, Samuel Markantone. He was the loving husband for 59 years of Josephine (Papazis) Markantone; cherished father of Lucas (Coral) Markantone, of Murrysville, Dr. Stephen (Mindy) Markantone, of Murrysville, Michael (Susan) Markantone, of North Carolina, and Dr. Gregory (Anne) Markantone, of Latrobe; and dear grandfather of Carissa (Micah) Larson, Micah Markantone, Desiree and Emmanuel "Manny" Markantone, Daniel (Naquille) Jacobs and Melida Markantone. Sam's first great-grandson is due to be born in June. In 1958, Sam began his business as a painting contractor and worked until 1994 when his son, Luke, took over. He was an active, lifelong member of the Presentation of Christ Greek Orthodox Church, "Ypapanti." Sam was a member of the F&AM for more than 48 years and was a four-time Past Master of the former Orient Lodge 590. Currently, he was a member of the Duquesne-McKeesport Lodge 731. In his younger years, Sam was a flying enthusiast and piloted his own small plane. He had a tireless spirit and enjoyed traveling, photography, coin collecting and making people laugh and smile. Above all, he relished spending time with his family, especially his grandchildren.

So sorry to hear of the passing of Mr. Markatone.
He had been a long time patient of ours.
He was a very quiet and kind man.
He always would remind me of the dates for the Greek Food Festivals.
Remember all the good times and cherish it in your hearts forever.

Sam was a terrific gardener! I remember the time Sam borrowed my groundhog trap to get the culprit who ate his Zucchini plant (he was so mad about that groundhog after all his hard work to grow the plant). Within an hour after I dropped it off, he called me for help, as the groundhog had died in the trap and he couldn't lift the trap. This puzzled me until I saw the size of this animal, dead with one eye missing, in the trap. It was the largest groundhog I ever saw, and it must have weighed 50 or 60 pounds! We enjoyed a good laugh together, knowing we kept the Granddaddy of the neighborhood from eating our gardens anymore! I still smile when I think of his incredible vegetable gardens. He didn't just have a green thumb - he had a green arm! I will miss him dearly...
