Victor was by far the best traffic cop EVER! As a former Pittsburgher, I have very fond memories of his perfect performances!

Vic was such a warm human being. I used to see him at my uncle’s grocery store, European Market, in downtown Pittsburgh where I worked to help support my college education. My mom would also help out and had fond memories of Vic. Always friendly. I moved away from Pittsburgh for work in 1980 and thought I had heard of his passing. I was watching Flashdance and decided to do a little research on him and how I discovered of his passing. I know he is with the Lord and he has been sorely missed. May his memory be eternal.

I remember looking for Officer Cianca every time we drove through Downtown. Not once did he ever fail to spot my little brother & me frantically waving to him, & he always managed to give one of his very unique waves in return. He brought smiles & created a fond memories for so many of us. I am so sorry for your loss. He will always remain, in so many of our hearts, as one of the people that made Pittsburgh a great hometown.

My Condolences are extended to the Cianca Family. Brother Vic, was a good friend, and fellow Officer of mine. Back in the 60's, before I transferred to the County Police. Brother Vic was an asset to the Pittsburgh Police; especially, the Traffic Div., and to the Citizens of the City of Pittsburgh, and, Allegheny County. Vic taught me how a proffessional Traffic Officer should handle any, and, all Police Traffic related situations. I will always be greatful to him. Vic will be sorely missed. May He Rest In Peace; and, may God Bless His Family, and loved ones. PEACE BROTHER VIC.
Respectfully; Elmer F. Falcione (Native Pgh.),

Vic and Richie,

Our deepest sympathies to you and your families on the loss of your father. It is with great fondness that my siblings and I remember your father as a family friend and a wonderful neighbor to the Tercsak, Carroll, Smith, Demarack, and Semplice Families on Wolford St. No matter what...your father always brought a smile to our faces.

My sympathy to the family. I had the pleasure of meeting officer Vic years ago while working my very first job out of high school. (He took me by the arm and escorted me across the intersection). Whenever possible, I made a point to cross the street where he was just to watch him and see how he made everyone smile! He will be missed.

My Condolences extended to the Cianca Family. It was a pleasure and a treat to pass through Vic's Intersection. May his soul rest in peace and may it continue to direct traffic through the portals of heaven's gate.

What a great loss for our small town. If there was ever a time to get stuck in traffic, it was when Officer Cianca was on duty. As a child growing up during his era, it was a treat to be in the car to watch the show on Liberty Ave. When seeing him on TV, we knew we had been entertained by a star. Thanks for the memories!!

May you be comforted in knowing that Officer Vic is now resting in God's memory with a wonderful hope for a future life on a paradise earth under God's Kingdom arrangement.

It's our prayer that you are comforted by the many kind words and positive hope for the future.

My deepest sympathies to the Cianca family and my sincerest thank you for sharing him with the city of Pittsburgh. I remember, fondly, the many times I saw him working, fascinated by his energy and friendliness. He was so friendly to everyone and a joy to watch. Vic was a Pittsburgh icon and we are blessed to have known him.

January 27, 2010

I watched Vic in person and on the CBS Evening News. The thing that showed through was his love of his job. Looking at it objectively, maybe the cold days, the air quality, and the danger of traffic made it less than an ideal job for some. But Vic was an inspiration to me on my job, and like Vic, I hope that pleasure translates into good health and long life.

Aunt Anna Marie, Victor, and Richard,

My deepest sympathy! As I share your loss, I recall younger years at Grandma's house and how Uncle Vic would always have all of us children around him at family gatherings. Oh, how he would entertain us with his jokes and tricks. And who could ever forget his imaginary "Duke the Dog"! He (Duke) was somehow always there. Strangely, you could hear him, but we never saw him. What fun Uncle Vic gave us and how he made us laugh! When I attended school in the city, he was working on Liberty Ave. He would see me at lunch time and stop all traffic, take me by the arm and escort me across the street. How sweet is that! Uncle Vic was such a kind and caring man. He will certainly be missed by all as he joins our other family members that have passed on to our home in Heaven with God. May God bless and comfort you!

All My Love,
Geri Anne

What a great loss to Pittsburgh! I know Officer Vic played a big part in making his hometown what it is today. I have such fond memories of seeing him direct traffic when I was younger. His smile and antics will live with me forever. He has now been truly promoted...as I'm sure he was needed to carry on his work in Heaven. Please accept my deepest, heartfelt sympathy.

In the 60s and 70s, my Father drove to Pittsburgh from Wellsburg, WV, everyday, for our family business. One of the joys of his day was to see Officer Cianca. That made the daily trip fun and we waited to hear about it every evening. Obviously Officer Cianca touched many people and will be alive in our memories for year to come. Thank you for sharing him with all of us.

January 26, 2010

My deepest sympathy to the Cianca family.
Officer Cianca touched thousands or it could be millions of Pittsburghers and visitors during his tenure with the City of Pittsburgh.
I remember when my Uncle passed away (he was also a traffic division officer); officer Cianca came to show his respect with many other officers. After the prayer service, Officer Cianca, went to the casket, waved his white gloved hands as he was directing my Uncle to Heaven.
Thank you Officer Cianca for all you did for Pgh. May you rest in Peace

Dear Cianca Family, I remember Vic as a traffic cop, but my fondest memories were after he retired. I'd see him in front of Benkowicz fish market doing his thing on Fridays during lent, or pumping gas at the Exxon in Bridgeville. But, Lastly I knew him as a good friend and customer at my Sunoco in Dormont. He came in to play his numbers almost on a daily basis after working in Bridgeville, and I tried to talk him into working for me, which would have been an real honor .We enjoyed him, his conversation, and his infectious smile and a 'God bless you' when he left. I road him home a few times to further my very enjoyable experience with this Good Man. GOD BLESS VIC!

Dear Cianca Family:

I was so sorry to hear of Vic's passing -- he was truly memorable as a policeman -- too bad he couldn't have trained today's cops to be like him! He will always be remembered as a true Pittsburgh Ambassador!

God Bless you all.

January 26, 2010

This gentleman/policeman helped to teach me the ropes of trying to get across Grant Street when I was fresh out of high school on my first job. I along with many others remember him stopping in the Grant Street Bar at 7:30am to wish everyone there having coffee a great day. He was the happiest man on his job and he transmitted that to those of us that came in contact with him.
We looked for him to brighten our day! He was a credit to the Pgh. Police Force and a memory that will never be forgotten by thousands that knew him. My sincere condolences to his family and to all of us who have lost a live memory but one that will last forever.

January 26, 2010

I remember going downtown just to watch officer Vic. He was a truely pleasant person and a real joy to watch. never did he have a traffic jam at his corner and people just loved to watch him perform.

My condolences on the passing of Mr. Cianca. I remember as a kid, my grandmother would always laugh and tell us about this policeman who would guide traffic, while miming and making funny faces. She loved him! I cannot recall if we were ever able to see him in action, but I definitely remember him on Candid Camera.

Every once in awhile God puts someone exactly in the job they were meant to do, and it shows by the way they approach it. Mr. Cianca was definitely one of these people.

January 26, 2010

Dear Cianca family and loved ones.

My family would like to express our sincerest condolences. Vic was not only a great cop but a great guy as well. My father, Donald Forbes Glunt, a politician in the 60s and with the District Attorney's office in the 70s and 80s, was well aquainted with Vic. He would often tease with him. My favorite memory of officer Cianaca was when he played his imaginary violin for me when I was trying to cross Liberty Ave. while driving the South Oakland Citiziens Council van full of my developmentally challenged clients. It really brightened our day. May God surround you with his comfort and peace.

Dear Mrs Cianca, Vic and Richie. Many years have passed since we were neighbors on Birtley Ave. I have so many fond memories of your family. I worked at Peoples Bank (PNC)in 1952 at 4th and Wood St., and Mr. Cianca and Eileen M. from Auto Club and myself took morning coffee breaks at a drugstore across the street. Mr. Cianca was a funny man and full of proficies and such a gentleman. He told us to always brush your teeth with cold water and he had the brightest smile to back it up. Little did we know at the time that eventually everyone would know how special he was.

My sympathies to his family and so glad to hear that he enjoyed such a long life with a loving family. A hello also to anyone else who was around way back then.

Sincerely,

To the loving family of Victor Cianca, Sr.

I am a Pittsburgh native and will always live in Pittsburgh. Officer Cianca epitomized everything there is to love about Pittsburgh and its residents. He loved the city and he loved us. Our loss is heaven's gain; for sure he is directing traffic for God.

January 26, 2010

My condolences to the Cianca Family. Pittsburgh has lost one of it's beloved treasures and heaven has gained an angel. I'm sure Vic is directing traffic now at St. Peter's gates. What wonderful service he gave to his country and to the City of Pittsburgh! Thank you Mr. Cianca.

January 26, 2010

Officer Cianca would occasionally direct rush hour traffic at the corner of Forbes and Grant. When I was working downtown in the late 70's, I would approach the intersection and watch with wonder and a smile on my face at the hilarious gestures he made: hands folded in prayer, eyes covered, following a pretty girl as she passed by. He made everyone smile at the end of a day's work. I even had the pleasure of being escorted by Officer Cianca across a busy Grant Street. He has been missed since the day he retired. My sympathy to his family.

It is a joy to read these rememberances. I was also a student at Duquesne in the '70's, and looked forward to Mr. Cianca's antics and his friendliness. And my dear Mother was also guided by his gentle hand while she was pregnant with me. She told that story often, always with a smile. Pittsburgh has lost another good man. God's blessings upon him and his family.

As a child, I was taught that to be a success, you needed to lead a happy and useful life and to do your best at whatever chose to do. Vic Cianca was the perfect example of that. He took a mundane job and turned it into a symphony. He took pride in his work, and we Pittsburghers took pride in him. He brought joy to our days and to our lives. Remembering Vic at his craft still brings a smile to my face.
Godspeed, Vic. Safe home.

One of my earliest recollections of coming to Pittsburgh for an education at PITT and a job at Duquesne Light was how much I enjoyed walking down 6th Avenue to Liberty and seeing the "Ballet Traffic Cop" in action. Vic even acknowledged me once as a pedestrian crossing the street. I was thrilled. I was sorry to see him retire, but I'm sure that he made the most of it during his last years on earth. Pittsburgh will always remember and miss him, but he has given us a legacy and a legend. My deepest sympathy to his family.

I first met Officer Cianca when I was eight years old. He was directing traffic in front of old Forbes Field and made it look so easy. The enjoyment from that day stayed with me always. He was one of the few individuals I knew who really enjoyed his job and helping people at the same time. His signature "sign of the cross" gesture was a classic.

Thanks, Vic. I hope St. Peter gives you the opportunity to show your stuff in Heaven with a big traffic jam.

Officer Vic was a wonderful man who managed to keep Pittsburgh traffic moving and making drivers laugh when they probably would have been swearing in a traffic jam. I always enjoyed watching him and his movements. When I read about his passing this morning, I realized that he was a link to "home" now that I am living in North Carolina. May our Precious God enfold him in His arms and keep him - and you, his family - in Perfect Peace. God Bless.

Wonderful memory, at one time Vic worked the corner of 2nd Ave & 10 St. I would play hooky & head downtown from southside. He'd stop me and ask "why aren't you in school Junior"? My reply "Holy Day of Obligation"! Vic "what obligation"? He would make hand gestures like, "shame on you, bless me and pray for me"! This same routine happened many times and he didn't turn me in!!
