Arthur M. Scully Jr., 82, of Ligonier, formerly of Pittsburgh, died Thursday evening, Oct. 28, 2010, at his home surrounded by the love and prayers of his family. He was born Feb. 23, 1928, in Pittsburgh, a son of the late Arthur M. and Julia Crocker Scully. Mr. Scully was a loving husband, devoted father and grandfather, a dedicated and charitable volunteer and ardent outdoorsman. In 1954, he married Eleanor "Gishie" Foster, who survives him, along with their four children, Ann S. (Kent) Nelson, of Jackson Hole, Wyo., Arthur Murtland (Debbie) Scully III and Henry Crocker Scully, all of Pittsburgh, and Timothy Ives (Deborah) Scully, of Edwards, Colo.; five grandchildren, Emily Blasier, Dillon, George, Morgan and Julia Scully; and two sisters, Marion (Claude) Barbee, of Atlanta, Ga., and Virginia Hart, of Elkin, N.C. Mr. Scully attended St. Paul's School in Concord, N.H., class of 1946. He graduated from the University of Pittsburgh with a Bachelor of Science degree in business in 1950. He served in the Naval Reserve from 1951-1953. He became assistant vice president in the trust division of Mellon Bank from 1953-1970. He then became chief operating officer of the Rolling Rock Club from 1970-1994. He was a trustee of the Richard King Mellon Foundation and the Richard K. Mellon Family and Charitable Trusts. As a lifelong resident of Pittsburgh, he served on the Carnegie Hero Fund Commission, a life trustee of the Carnegie Museums of Pittsburgh and a member and one-time chairman of the Carnegie Museum of Natural History Board, Allegheny Cemetery from 1996-2003, and Magee-Womens Hospital Board of Trustees from 1956-1985, where he chaired the finance and insurance committees. In addition, he was a member of the board of trustees of the Western Pennsylvania School for Blind Children, Shadyside Presbyterian Church, and the Beckwith Institute for Innovation in Patient Care. Mr. Scully had also served on the board of governors of the Ligonier Valley Endowment. He was a member of St. Michael's of the Valley Church, where he served as usher for many years, the Rolling Rock Club, the Duquesne Club, the Pittsburgh Golf Club, the Boone and Crockett Club, the St. Andrew's Club in Florida, and was well known for his French crepes, which he prepared for the St. Michael's Fair. Mr. Scully was a kind, ethical man of integrity, who leaves a legacy of caring and trust. A service to celebrate Mr. Scully's life will be held at 10 a.m. Monday in St. Michael's of the Valley Church, Rector, with his pastor, the Rev. Dr. James B. Simons, officiating. The family will receive friends following the service at the Rolling Rock Club. Private interment will be in Allegheny Cemetery, Pittsburgh.
