Bertha Mayers Obituary

Bertha J. Mayers, 93, a resident of Bedford, Ohio, for the past 46 years, and formerly of Herminie, died Thursday, Oct. 17, 2002, at South Pointe Hospital, Warrensville Heights, Ohio. She was born Nov. 29, 1908, in Irwin, a daughter of the late Chalmer and Eliza (Williams) Markle. Mrs. Mayers, ``Bertha,' loved to bake and make candy for friends and also numerous weddings over the years. She was a member of Maple Heights United Methodist Church and was very active with the women's club of the church. She also served as a member of the Election Board of Cuyahoga County, Ohio. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, James R. Mayers, in 1966; a brother, James Henry Markle; and a sister, Emma Markle. Mrs. Mayers, ``Bertha,' is survived by a niece, Muriel and her husband, the Rev. Duane Markle, of Stoystown; a nephew, the Rev. Richard Markle and his wife, Virginia, of Washington, Pa.; five great-nieces and -nephews; and five great-great-nieces and -nephews, all of whom thought she was a very special lady. Friends will be received at the JOSEPH W. NICKELS FUNERAL HOME INC., Herminie, Sunday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Funeral services will be held Monday at 11 a.m. in the funeral home with the Revs. Duane Slade and Richard Markle co-officiating. A private family interment will follow in the Westmoreland County Memorial Park. In lieu of flowers, please make memorials to either Camp Allegheny, 100 Camp Allegheny Drive, Stoystown, PA 15563, or Maple Heights United Methodist Church, 18900 Libby Road, Maple Heights, OH 44137.
